2022 Men's Lacrosse Players of the Week

  • Chris Darminio, Lynchburg, Jr., Long-stick Midfielder

    Darminio, a junior from Sykesville, Md., has been expert as Lynchburg's long-stick midfielder, scoring goals in six straight games including a pair last week to help the Hornets secure the #2 seed in the ODAC Tournament. In a 20-8 win over Bridgewater, the All-American hopeful picked up a pair of ground balls and caused two turnovers while also getting forward for a goal in his fifth straight game. He increased that run to six games with a goal and an assist in a 13-10 win over Hampden-Sydney. He continued his strong midfield play with four ground balls and a trio of caused turnovers to key the Hornets attack. For the season, Darminio is third in the ODAC with a career-best 81 ground balls and tied for sixth with 21 caused turnovers. He has registered eight points on a career-high matching seven goals with one assist.
  • Taylor Witherell, Washington and Lee, Sr., Attackman

    Witherell, a senior from Wilmington, Del., put together a big week in helping Washington and Lee extend its winning streak to six straight games to stay atop the ODAC standings with a pair of conference victories last week. Witherell registered 15 points over the two contests. He opened with a career-high nine points in an 18-11 win at Bridgewater. He scored four times and dished out five assists to go with three ground balls and a caused turnover. Witherell followed up on the weekend with six points in a 27-6 win over Guilford. He scored three goals and helped out on three others. He also collected four ground balls and caused a two turnovers. For the season, Witherell has recorded a team-best 41 points on 25 goals and 16 assists. He has picked up 28 ground balls and caused seven miscues.
  • Jack Averna, Randolph-Macon, Sr., Attackman
    April 18, 2022
    Averna, a senior from Warrenton, Va., played a big role in the Yellow Jackets picking up a pair of ODAC wins and improving to 8-5 overall and 4-2 in league play. Averna posted a 13-point week over the two victories beginning with a career-high 10-point outing in a 16-14 win over Shenandoah. He tied his personal-best for the second time this season with six goals scored. His original half-dozen tally came in a 20-2 win over Goucher with his second such output coming in an 18-11 win at Bridgewater. Averna, who collected three ground balls against SU, also handed out a career-high four assists. He then helped Randolph-Macon post its first win over Hampden-Sydney since 2013 with a three goals in a 14-13 triumph. His final tally -- R-MC's 14th goal -- proved the difference-maker as the Tigers scored with 39-seconds left to make it 14-13, a result with carried through to the final horn. For the season, Averna is fourth in the ODAC in points (65), third in goals scored (46) and seventh in assists (19). He has scored at least one goal in all 13 games played and registered three or more points in 12-of-13 outings.
  • Luke Kammerman, Roanoke, So., Attackman

    Kammerman, a sophomore from Trumbull, Conn., helped Roanoke to a pair of victories including a key ODAC tilt as the Maroons improved to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the ODAC. Kammerman registered 13 points for the week. The former ODAC Co-Rookie of the Year posted nine points on two goals and 7 assists in a 21-16 win at Mary Washington. He added four ground balls and a caused turnover to his line. Kammerman then went for four points in a 13-9 win at Hampden-Sydney. He scored three times and dished out an assist. For the season, Kammerman leads the ODAC with 62 points and 34 assists. His 28 goals scored are seventh in the league.
  • Ray O'Brien, Hampden-Sydney, So., Attackman

    O'Brien, a sophomore from Scituate, Mass., helped Hampden-Sydney to a pair of victories to improve the Tigers' records to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in ODAC play. O'Brien posted an 11-point week over the two victories. He opened with seven points on five goals and two assists with a pair of ground balls and a caused turnover in a 17-9 road win at Mary Washington. The points and goals totals are both personal career-bests. O'Brien then helped the Tigers to their first conference victory with three goals and an assist in a 10-6 triumph over Bridgewater. He added three ground balls and a caused miscue. For the season, O'Brien has notched 33 points on 19 goals and 14 assists, the latter number tied for seventh in the ODAC.
  • Chris Martel, Bridgewater, Sr., Attackman
    March 21, 2022
    Martel, a senior from Linthicum, Md., put together an 11-point week in leading Bridgewater to a pair of victories to improve the Eagles' records atop the ODAC standings to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in league play. Martel scored twice in a 19-9 victory over North College College (Illinois). He scored BC's first goal of the game and then put the Eagles ahead for good at 10-9 with 12:41 to play. He also picked up two ground balls in the contest. On the weekend, Martel became the fourth player in program history to record at least nine points in a game in an 18-5 road win at Ferrum. He scored seven goals, matching his personal career-best output, and added two assists for a new career-high point total. For the season, Martel leads the ODAC in goals scored (38) and is second in points (43). He also leads the conference in shots (112) and shots on goal (69).
  • Gabriel Alexander, Bridgewater, So., Face-off Specialist

    Alexander, a sophomore from Chesterfield, Va., played a major role in Bridgewater picking up a pair of victories last week as he won 82.1-percent (32-of-39) of his face-offs and collected 25 ground balls over the two contests. In a 17-10 win over Wilkes University, Alexander won 17-of-22 face-offs (77.3%) with 14 ground balls. He had stretches of five and six straight face-offs won, helping Bridgewater to 11 first-half goals. Alexander was even better in a 24-5 ODAC win at Virginia Wesleyan. In addition to scoring the first two collegiate goals of his career, Alexander won 15-of-17 (88.2%) face-offs and picked up 11 ground balls. For the season, Alexander leads the ODAC in face-offs won (72-of-121) and ground balls (51), the latter of which is 10th in Division III.
  • Mark Sprague, Virginia Wesleyan, Jr., Midfielder

    Sprague, a junior from Marshall, Va., led Virginia Wesleyan to a pair of non-conference victories with a career week. Sprague registered a career-best six goals in the Marlins 20-9 victory over Husson. He added one assist to give him seven points to match his career-high for a third time. He added four ground balls and a caused turnover to his line. Sprague was again a multi-point scorer in a 22-9 win over Gordon. He scored three times and dished out a pair of assists for five points, giving him at least three points in all five games played this season. For the year, Sprague is tied for the ODAC lead in points (23) and is second in goals scored (17).
  • Dylan Wolfe, Lynchburg, Jr., Attackman

    Wolfe, a junior from Pasadena, Md., played a big part in the Hornets top-10 nationally ranked showdown last week. Wolfe registered personal-best six points as sixth-ranked Lynchburg took down #8 Cabrini University, 15-9. He scored a career-high four goals to go with a pair of assists. One of his goals came with a man-up. He also collected a pair of ground balls. Six of his seven shots were on-net, leading to a .857 shots-on-goal percentage. For the season, Wolfe has notched seven points on five goals and two assists. Lynchburg boasts a six-game home winning streak against ranked opponents.
  • Sean Duffy, Hampden-Sydney, Sr., Midfielder

    Duffy, a senior from Ambler, Pa., helped Hampden-Sydney start off the 2022 season with a 19-11 victory over Southern Virginia University. He registered a career-high eight points powered by a personal-best seven goals along with an assist. Three of his goals and his assist came in the first quarter with the Tigers' building a 7-3 lead after the opening 15 minutes. Duffy, who scored one man-up goal, added a ground ball to his stat line. Ten of his 15 shots were on target (66.7%).
  • Gage Turner, Randolph-Macon, Fr., Goalkeeper
    February 14, 2022
    Turner, a freshman from Spartanburg, S.C., stood on his head guarding the Yellow Jackets pipes as he helped Randolph-Macon to a 7-5 road win at Mary Washington in his collegiate debut. The victory marked the first win for R-MC over the Eagles since 2001. Turner went the distance and posted a .762 save percentage with 16 stops against 37 total shots at UMW. He made four saves in each period, allowing R-MC to build a 6-3 lead through three quarters on the way to holding Mary Washington to single digits for the first time since 2007. Turner also picked up three ground balls and caused three turnovers from his goal area.
