GREENSBORO, N.C. --- The No. 1 Washington and Lee men's soccer team saw its season come to an end in the NCAA Semifinals on Friday evening by a 2-1 overtime score to No. 6 Connecticut College.
 
With just under a minute remaining in the first overtime period, Camels' (18-4-1) sophomore midfielder Rye Jaran found junior defender Steve Yeonas in the center of the box for the game-winning score. The goal came with 55 seconds remaining in the period and also came after the Generals had played the entirety of OT and the final four minutes of regulation down a man.
 
The Camels tied the game at one goal apiece in the 83rd minute when senior forward MT Tshuma fired a long range shot that ricocheted off the right post and into the back of the net.
 
W&L broke a scoreless tie in the 74th minute when sophomore forward Adrian Zimmerman (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) scored with his left foot from just inside the 18-yard box. The Generals moved the ball up the field with crisp passing on the play, which saw sophomore midfielder Grant McCarty (Dallas, Texas/Parish Episcopal) and junior midfielder Victor Ndhlovu (Lusaka, Zambia/Trident College) earn an assist each.
 
Both teams came close to having one additional goal each in the second half, as both sides saw one attempt hit off the crossbar.
 
Zimmerman's goal marked his fifth consecutive game with a goal, and he finished the 2021 NCAA Tournament with 11 goals and 22 points. His 22 points were just one shy of tying the all-time NCAA record for points in a single tournament, including women's soccer, held by Stanford's Catarina Macario in 2019. Additionally, Zimmerman's five straight games with a goal is the longest streak of consecutive games with a goal since Dylan Ritch '19 scored in six straight games in 2018.
 
Junior midfielder Michael Kutsanzira (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Putnam Science Academy (Conn.)) and first-year defender PJ Ryan (Morristown, N.J./West Morris Mendham) led the team with two shots each. Senior goalkeeper Michael Nyc (Kildeer, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) (9-2-1) played all 99:05 in goal. Nyc finishes his career with a program-record 0.65 goals-against average in 5,149:37 played.
 
Tshuma led the Camels' offense with three shots and Yeonas finished the game with two attempts. Junior goalkeeper Sam Maidenberg (14-4-1) logged two saves across all 99:05 of game time.
 
The Generals finish their 2021 season having recorded program records for best NCAA Tournament finish as well as total goals scored (70), while finishing one win shy of tying the program record for most wins in a season (19, 2000). The team's 0.863 winning percentage this season is also the second-best in program history (0.905, 2000).
