NFCA Names Rainey an All-American

Eleven Student-Athletes Selected to All-Region Teams

SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke College outfielder Leona Rainey (pictured) was named an All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) last week in its annual awards ceremony at the NCAA Division III Softball Championship banquet in Salem.  The ODAC was also represented by 11 student-athletes on the NFCA All-Region teams.

Rainey, a sophomroe from Sandston, Va., is the first Maroon to earn All-America status since 2003 and the fifth in the 15-year history of the program.  A two-time All-ODAC First Team choice, Rainey broke her own school-record for most stolen bases in a season with an ODAC-best 32. She has 62 career steals, ranking fifth all-time at Roanoke. She led the conference in batting (.455), runs (43) and on-base percentage (.521).  She led the Maroons in hits (55) and walks (15) to go with six doubles and 14 RBI.

In addition to Rainey, ten other ODAC athletes earned NFCA All-Atlantic Region accolades.  Fellow Maroon Lisa Scruggs (.416, 8 HR, 31 RBI) joined Rainey on the first team.

Four players appear on the second team, including 2011 ODAC Player of the Year, Bridgewater College's Lauren Childress (.444, 14 2B, 3 HR, 26 RBI).  The conference's top rookie, Virginia Wesleyan College pitcher MacKenzie Creech (1.83 ERA, 18-6, 160.1 IP, 158 K), was tabbed to this group as an at-large selection.  Outfielders Molly Smith (.414, 14 2B, 3 HR, 40 RBI) from Eastern Mennonite University and Lauren Stevenson (.440, 4 3B, 30 SB) from Randolph College complete the ODAC's contingent on the second team.

The league's showing on the third team is five players strong, including a pair of Marlins in outfielder Tori Higginbotham (.369, 7 2B, 4 HR, 16 SB) and catcher Jaclyn Quinn (.383, 18 2B, 5 HR, 39 RBI).  Shortstops Hillary Rees (.410, 13 2B, 3 HR, 33 RBI, 12 SB) from Bridgewater and Brooke Hensley (.441, 31 R, 31 RBI) from Eastern Mennonite are joined by Guilford College outfielder Courtney Kozar (.402, 41 R, 24 RBI, 11 SB) in capping the ODAC's representation.
