Toth's Two-Run Homer Powers R-MC Past Salem

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --- Freshman Skylar Toth (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) smacked a two-run homer to spark a four-run top of the 12th as the Randolph-Macon softball team posted an 8-6 victory over Salem in an elimination game at the Newport News Regional in the NCAA Tournament.

The Yellow Jackets (28-10) advance to play top seed and host Christopher Newport for the regional title. R-MC must defeat the Captains twice to earn the regional crown.

Freshman Hayden Fontenot (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge) had a bunt single to lead off the top of the 12th. Toth twice tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt, but was unsuccessful both times. She launched a 1-2 pitch well over the fence in left center to give the Yellow Jackets a 6-4 advantage. Senior Sharese Jarvis (Cobbs Creek, Va./Mathews) added an RBI single and junior Madison Gilman (Glen Allen, Va./Patrick Henry) scored on an error as R-MC took an 8-4 lead.

The Spirits (20-16-2) scored a pair in the bottom of the 12th to make the final 8-6.

The game began on Saturday. Jarvis and junior Katie Woody (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) both had RBI singles in the top of the first for R-MC. Salem plated a run in the third to make it 2-1.

Fontenot had a run-scoring single in the fifth and freshman Harley Jones (Broadnax, Va./Brunswick) scored on an error in the seventh to put the Yellow Jackets on top 4-1.

Salem tallied three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

The teams played two more innings on Saturday before play was suspended after nine frames with the score knotted at 4-4. Play resumed on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. in the top of the 10th.

Jarvis finished with three hits, two runs and two RBI to lead the R-MC offense. Woody and Fontenot both added three hits for the Yellow Jackets.|

Freshman left-hander Nelda Bagley (21-5) allowed 11 hits and one walk in 12 innings with seven strikeouts in earning the victory. All six runs by Salem were unearned.
