• W&L Tabs Clancy to Women's Hoops Post

    Washington and Lee University Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that following a national search, Christine Clancy has been promoted to head women's basketball coach and assistant professor of physical education. She takes over for Mandy King, who resigned after the 2011-12 campaign.

    Guilford College commanded a five-point lead at the break, but Centre used a 24-7 burst over 14 minutes of the second half to defeat the Quakers, 59-47, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament. GC finishes the season 22-7 after making its first national postseason appearance since 2002.

    Guilford College will be the lone ODAC representative in the 2012 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament. The Quakers will head to Danville, Ky. for its first round matchup with the Colonels from Centre College. Also in the four-team pod is Washington University-St. Louis and Ferrum College. Play starts on Friday.

    Third-seeded Guilford held #1 Virginia Wesleyan to just 18-percent shooting as the Quakers topped the Marlins, 57-40, to win the 2012 ODAC Women's Basketball Tournament. The title is the 3rd for the GC women's hoops program and its first since the 2002 season. GC heads to the NCAA D-III Tournament.

    A layup by Washington and Lee's Katy Wilson was blocked as time expired and top-seeded Virginia Wesleyan held on for a 60-58 win over fifth-seeded W&L in the semifinals of the ODAC women's basketball tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Salem Civic Center.

    Top seeded Virginia Wesleyan held #8 Lynchburg to 30-percent shooting as the Marlins moved on to the semifinals with a 78-61 win over the Hornets in the first quarterfinal of the ODAC Women's Basketball Tournament. VWC moves on to face #5 Washington and Lee in the semifinals on Saturday.

VWC took home two major awards as Stephany Dunmyer was named Coach of the Year and Sarah Seipp earned Rookie of the Year accolades. W&L's Becca Bolton was selected as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
  • Women's Basketball Tourney Seeds Set

    The final day of the regular season provided plenty of movement within the standings that resulted in three different ties within the ranks. Virginia Wesleyan and Eastern Mennonite finished deadlocked at 17-3 following Saturday's contest. The Marlins enter the tourney as the top seed thanks to its 2-0 record head-to-head with the Royals during the regular season.

    The NCAA Division III released its second week of regional rankings for basketball on Wednesday. The Old Dominion Athletic Confefence has three schools ranked in the men's South Region poll, while Virginia Wesleyan College is the sole ODAC representative on the women's side.

    Lynchburg College and Special Olympics Virginia (SOVA) continued its long-existing partnership on Friday, Feb. 3, as the Hornets' women's basketball team played host to SOVA basketball programs from Campbell Country and Lynchburg (city). The two teams took in the crosstown matchup between LC and Randolph, and faced each other in a game at halftime.

    Randolph-Macon College head coach Carroll LaHaye became just the 15th NCAA Division III women's basketball coach to record 500 victories as the Yellow Jackets topped Roanoke College, 82-70, in ODAC action on Friday night. Maroons' head coach Susan Dunagan is also a member of the 500-win club. R-MC's win marked the fourth straight over Roanoke.

    Bridgewater mentor Jean Willi (pictured) became the fourth coach in ODAC women's hoops history to win 300 games in the Eagles' 80-63 win over Southern Virginia on Tuesday night. Willi, who got a career-best 34-point effort from Jessica Mullen (also pictured), joins RC's Susan Dunagan, R-MC's Carroll LaHaye and former E&H coach Joy Scruggs in the 300-plus win club.

Lynchburg's Manny Hernandez put together a pair of 21 point games in helping the Hornets to a 2-0 week. Bridgewater's Jessica Mullen posted an ODAC-high 31 points with six steals in a win over LC.

    Randolph-Macon was picked to repeat as ODAC champion in the ODAC Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll, having earned nine first place votes on the way to 99 points. Guilford sits second with 79 tallies and one top nod, and Bridgewater and Washington and Lee tied for third with 72 points. The Generals received the remaining first place selection.
