Reid, Salyers, Mathews also Tabbed for Individual Honors
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke College midfielder Gina
Valles secured her second straight ODAC Player of the Year award as
part of the 2010 ODAC Women’s Lacrosse All-Conference
Teams. Lynchburg College head coach Bruce Reid earned the
league’s top coaching award, and Virginia Wesleyan
College’s Nikki Salyers was tabbed the ODAC Rookie of the
Year. The General’s Emmy Mathews was selected as the
ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete through a vote of the
conference’s sports information directors.
Valles, a junior from South Windsor, Conn., makes her third
appearance on the All-ODAC First Team while also taking home her
third straight major individual honor that includes the 2008 rookie
award. Valles led the ODAC in all three scoring categories
with 109 total points from 67 goals and 42 assists. She is
currently ranked fifth in the nation in overall points and points
per game (6.81), 13th in assists per game (2.63),
14th in goals scored and 15th in total
assists. In 16 games played this season, Valles recorded no
fewer than three points each time out. She registered double
digit points three times in victories over Randolph-Macon College
(11), Hollins University (13) and Bridgewater College (10).
She registered highs of seven goals scored on two separate
occasions, once against R-MC and the other in a win over St. John
Fisher.
Reid was rewarded with his first ODAC Coach of the Year award after
leading the Hornets to a 14-4 overall record (6-2 ODAC) and a
championship game berth in the conference tournament. In his
eighth season guiding Lynchburg’s women’s lacrosse
squads, Reid’s Hornets are first in the league in team goals
against average (7.68 per game) and third in goals scored (13.22
per game). Lynchburg is currently ranked fifth in the region
in the latest NCAA Division III regional rankings.
Salyers, a freshman from Severna Park, Md., patrolled the
Marlins’ midfield in her first season at VWC. Her stat
line was well-balanced as she registered 28 points on 14 goals and
four assists. She also recorded 37 ground balls, caused 16
turnovers, and took control of 15 draws. Salyers best scoring
game of the season came against Randolph-Macon in the regular
season in which she scored a pair of goals to go with one assist
for three points.
Mathews, a junior from Baltimore, Md., starred both in the midfield
and in the classroom for Washington and Lee. She boasts a
3.875 grade point average while majoring in philosophy and business
administration. She is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa
(leadership) and Phi Eta Sigma (freshman) honor societies as well
as Kathekon, Washington and Lee’s student alumni
association. In 2009, Mathews was one of three statewide
winners of the Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges
(VFIC)/Norfolk Southern Scholarship.
On the field, Mathews is a two-time All-ODAC First Team
selection. A team captain, Mathews is the Generals’
third leading scoring with 33 points on 26 goals and seven
assists. She has also recorded 28 draw controls, 23 ground
balls and 18 caused turnovers.
