Valles Repeats as Women's Lax POY

Reid, Salyers, Mathews also Tabbed for Individual Honors

SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke College midfielder Gina Valles secured her second straight ODAC Player of the Year award as part of the 2010 ODAC Women’s Lacrosse All-Conference Teams.  Lynchburg College head coach Bruce Reid earned the league’s top coaching award, and Virginia Wesleyan College’s Nikki Salyers was tabbed the ODAC Rookie of the Year.  The General’s Emmy Mathews was selected as the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete through a vote of the conference’s sports information directors.

Valles, a junior from South Windsor, Conn., makes her third appearance on the All-ODAC First Team while also taking home her third straight major individual honor that includes the 2008 rookie award.  Valles led the ODAC in all three scoring categories with 109 total points from 67 goals and 42 assists.  She is currently ranked fifth in the nation in overall points and points per game (6.81), 13th in assists per game (2.63), 14th in goals scored and 15th in total assists.  In 16 games played this season, Valles recorded no fewer than three points each time out.  She registered double digit points three times in victories over Randolph-Macon College (11), Hollins University (13) and Bridgewater College (10).  She registered highs of seven goals scored on two separate occasions, once against R-MC and the other in a win over St. John Fisher.

Reid was rewarded with his first ODAC Coach of the Year award after leading the Hornets to a 14-4 overall record (6-2 ODAC) and a championship game berth in the conference tournament.  In his eighth season guiding Lynchburg’s women’s lacrosse squads, Reid’s Hornets are first in the league in team goals against average (7.68 per game) and third in goals scored (13.22 per game).  Lynchburg is currently ranked fifth in the region in the latest NCAA Division III regional rankings.

Salyers, a freshman from Severna Park, Md., patrolled the Marlins’ midfield in her first season at VWC.  Her stat line was well-balanced as she registered 28 points on 14 goals and four assists.  She also recorded 37 ground balls, caused 16 turnovers, and took control of 15 draws.  Salyers best scoring game of the season came against Randolph-Macon in the regular season in which she scored a pair of goals to go with one assist for three points.

Mathews, a junior from Baltimore, Md., starred both in the midfield and in the classroom for Washington and Lee.  She boasts a 3.875 grade point average while majoring in philosophy and business administration.  She is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa (leadership) and Phi Eta Sigma (freshman) honor societies as well as Kathekon, Washington and Lee’s student alumni association.  In 2009, Mathews was one of three statewide winners of the Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges (VFIC)/Norfolk Southern Scholarship.

On the field, Mathews is a two-time All-ODAC First Team selection.  A team captain, Mathews is the Generals’ third leading scoring with 33 points on 26 goals and seven assists.  She has also recorded 28 draw controls, 23 ground balls and 18 caused turnovers.
