Comeback Bid Falls a Goal Short
LEXINGTON, Va. --- Elizabethtown senior
attacker Stephanie Kreis (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School)
registered eight points to help guide the Blue Jays to a 13-12
victory over the 14th-ranked Washington and Lee
women’s lacrosse team on Wednesday evening in NCAA Division
III First Round action at the W&L Turf Field.
After both teams exchanged a pair of goals to open the contest and
leave the score tied at 2-2, Elizabethtown (16-4) used a trio of
goals, including tallies from first-year midfielder Sarah Cullinan
(West Chester, Pa./West Chester East), senior attacker Megan Byrnes
(Lutherville, Md./Towson) and senior midfielder Katie Caprinolo
(Jarrettsville, Md./North Harford) to assume a 5-3 lead with 12:27
remaining in the half.
However, the Generals (14-5) responded with three goals of their
own from sophomore attacker Maddie McKaig (Annapolis,
Md./Annapolis), junior midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn
Mawr) and senior attacker Meredith Freeman (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS)
to knot the score at 6-6 going into the half.
Cullinan opened the second-half scoring for the Blue Jays off an
assist from Kreis, but W&L tallied the next two goals from
Freeman and Emmy Mathews to take an 8-7 lead with 25:07 remaining
in the contest. Elizabethtown then went on to record the next four
goals, extending its lead to three points (11-8) with 18:54
remaining, a lead they would not relinquish.
After a weather delay, the Generals added an unassisted tally from
Freeman at the 14:06 mark, but the Blue Jays added two more goals
to take their largest lead of the game, 13-9, with 7:52 remaining.
W&L used a late-game surge, collecting two goals from Freeman
and one from Emmy Mathews but it was not enough as Elizabethtown
claimed the 13-12 victory.
W&L was paced by Freeman, who finished the contest with six
goals, while Emmy Mathews added five points off of four goals and
one assist. The Generals also received goals from junior midfielder
Wilton Megargel (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne’s-Belfield)
and McKaig. Junior Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal)
played all 60:00 in net, stopping two shots.
Elizabethtown was led by Kreis, who tallied eight points off of two
goals and six assists. Byrnes, Caprinolo and Cullinan each added
three goals for the Blue Jays. First-year goalkeeper Rachael
Waldman (Belmar, N.J./Academy of Allied Health & Science)
played the entirety in net, collecting 11 saves.
With the loss, the Generals ended their season with a 14-5 record.
Elizabethtown will advance to face Mary Washington in second round
action on Saturday at Franklin & Marshall University.
