Late Rally Falls Short as Season Comes to a Close
SALISBURY, Md. --- A late second-half rally
came up short as the No. 15 Washington and Lee women's lacrosse
team fell to No. 5 Salisbury, 13-12, on Saturday afternoon at Sea
Gull Stadium in Salisbury.
W&L (15-5) netted the first two goals of the game, as
first-year attacker Margaret Klein (North Andover, Mass./Brooks)
and junior attacker Maddie McKaig (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) found
the net to give the Generals an early 2-0 lead with 27:43 remaining
in the opening stanza.
Salisbury (19-2) responded with a three-goal run, as senior
midfielder Morgan Illian (Salisbury, Md./Parkside), junior
midfielder Allie Wheatley (Cambridge, Md./Salisbury School) and
senior attacker Trish DiGirolomo (Davidsonville, Md./Archbishop
Spalding) each found the net to put the Sea Gulls up, 3-2, at the
21:01 mark. McKaig ended the streak with an unassisted tally to tie
the score at 3-3 with 19:27 on the clock, and after a SU goal,
senior midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) connected
on a free position shot to knot the score (4-4) with 15:55
remaining in the first half.
A streak of four unanswered Salisbury goals extended the Sea Gulls'
lead to four goals (4-8) with 6:53 remaining. Junior attacker Alli
Shearin (Essex Fells, N.J./West Essex Regional) took a pass from
senior midfielder Kate Donnelly (Houston, Texas/St. John's) to put
an end to the SU scoring, leaving the score at 8-5 with 4:23
remaining. Senior attacker Kate Speare (Wallingford, Pa./Strath
Haven) had a chance to pull the Generals back to within four goals
with five seconds remaining but she was unable to connect, as SU
took a 9-5 advantage into the break.
Salisbury opened the second half with a goal, but W&L scored
three-consecutive goals to pull the squad back to within two goals
(10-8). McKaig netted her third goal of the game to leave the score
at 10-6 with 25:03 remaining. Senior attacker Wilton Megargel
(Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) and Shearin scored goals
within 40 seconds of each other, as W&L left the scoreboard at
10-8 with 22:18 remaining.
Another three-goal run by Salisbury, featuring goals from sophomore
attacker Katie Bollhorst (Severna Park, Md./St. Mary's), DiGirolomo
and junior midfielder Alyssa Fowler (Odenton, Md./Arundel) pushed
the Sea Gulls lead back to five goals (13-8), but W&L responded
with four unanswered goals over a 9:12 span to get the Generals
back to within one goal (13-12). First-year midfielder Meade
Brewster (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham) started the scoring
off an assist from Megargel, and Shearin scored on a free position
shot to leave the score at 13-13 with 9:20 remaining. McKaig added
an unassisted marker at 5:14, and Megargel scored with just 1:44 on
the clock as W&L drew to within one goal (13-12) in the final
minutes.
Junior midfielder Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Academy of the
Holy Cross) won the ensuing draw control, setting McKaig up for a
game-tying goal with 58 seconds remaining. However, McKaig's shot
was turned away by SU senior keeper Julie Ann Caulfield (Drexel
Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) and the Sea Gulls collected the ground ball,
running out the clock to advance to the regional finals on
Sunday.
W&L was led by McKaig, who finished with four goals and an
assist. Shearin added three goals and an assist, while Megargel
scored two goals and an assist. First-year midfielder Alex Van Horn
(Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) won a game-high five draw controls, and
senior midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) collected
a team-high two ground balls. Senior keeper Katharine Farrar
(Lexington, Va./Episcopal) played the entirety, stopping seven
shots.
DiGirolomo paced SU with six points (2g, 4a), while Wheatley (4g)
and Bollhorst (2g, 2a) each added four points. Caulfield played all
60:00 in net, recording seven saves.
With the loss, the Generals end their season with a 15-5 overall
record.
