Generals Advance in NCAA Women's Lacrosse with Win Over Denison

LEXINGTON, Va. --- The 12th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team advanced to the regional round of the NCAA Tournament after posting a 13-5 victory over the Denison Big Red on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

With the win, W&L (17-2) has tied the program's record for wins in a season.

With the game tied at 1-1 with 23:31 left on the clock in the first period, senior attacker Greta Witter  (Houston, Texas / The Hill School) sparked a 6-0 run that lasted for 10:25 to give the Generals a 7-2 lead with 7:38 left on the clock. First-year attacker Sara Holland (Houston, Texas / M.B. Lamar) led the spurt with two goals, while sophomore attacker Melissa Coggins(St. John's, Fla. / Bartram Trail) added three assists.

Denison (13-5) answered with a man-up goal from junior midfielder Erin Keller (Sewickley, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) at the 3:36 mark, but senior attacker Margaret Klein (North Andover, Mass. / Brooks) scored at the 2:32 mark to give W&L a six-goal (8-2) lead going into the intermission.

Denison would score just three goals in the second half, while W&L added five to its total to reach the 13-5 final margin. Five different Generals scored in the final period and Coggins notched the only assist.

For the game, W&L held a 12-8 edge in draw controls and a 21-14 advantage in ground balls.

Junior keeper Cara Mulligan (Glen Ridge, N.J. / Glen Ridge) earned the win in goal for the Generals, finishing with five saves. Sophomore Laura Van Horn (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) suffered the loss and finished with six saves.

Sophomore attacker Carly Taglienti (Moorestown, N.J. / Moorestown) led the Blue and White with three goals and one assist, while Holland, Klein and first-year midfielder Hayley Soutter (McLean, Va. / Langley) each notched two goals. Senior defender Leanne Stone (Darien, Conn. / Darien) led the defense with five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Senior midfielder Meade Brewster (Brookside, N.J. / West Morris Mendham) added one goal to go along with her game-high six draw controls.

Sophomore attacker Carol Allen (Nashville, Tenn. / Ensworth) paced the Big Red with two goals. Junior defender Isabel Swicklik (Baltimore, Md. / Friends School of Baltimore) led the back line with three ground balls and three caused turnovers, while junior midfielder Whitney Powel (Shaker Heights, Ohio / Westminster School) added three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers.

The Generals will face the winner of the TCNJ – Susquehanna game next Saturday. The game-time and location will be announced at a later date.
