ODAC Women's Lacrosse Poll | W&L Stands at the Top

FOREST, Va. --- Washington and Lee University takes up a familiar position atop the ODAC Women's Lacrosse Preseason Poll, picking up 10 first place votes on the way to an even 100 points in the annual survey. Randolph-Macon College earned the remaning top nod and 89 markers to sit second, and Roanoke College rounds out the top-three with 80 points. Shenandoah University is just a few tallies back with 77 points.

The Generals have hoisted 20 ODAC women's lacrosse trophies, but recent history has been especially successful. W&L has won 10 straight titles and 21 consecutive ODAC Tournament games dating back to an 11-9 setback to Roanoke in the 2009 championship game. Washington and Lee has run thru the ODAC regular season undefeated in each of the past six seasons, winning 54 straight regular season league games. W&L has not lost to an ODAC team in 69 consecutive outings.

The top-seeded Generals defeated Shenandoah (20-9) in the semifinals to earn a spot in the 2019 championship game. They were joined by second-seeded Randolph-Macon, which used a Hannah Jones goal with 0:21 to play to top Roanoke, 13-12, in the semifinals.

Washington and Lee came out in spectacular fashion in the championship game, scoring the game's first four goals before taking a 12-1 lead into the intermission. The Generals cruised thereafter, posting a 17-7 victory.

Washington and Lee features in both of the preeminent national women's lacrosse preseason polls entering the 2020 campaign. The Generals, who reached the NCAA final four in 2017, are slotted eighth in the IWLCA Division III Preseason Coaches Poll. They improve by one spot in the Nike/US Lacrosse Preseason Poll, ranking seventh in the country. Defending national champion Middlebury College tops both surveys.

While there is plenty of room for growth for 2020 newcomers to make names for themselves, there are still plenty of recognizable standouts returning to league rosters. That includes 22 of the 39 All-ODAC honorees from 2019. Washington and Lee leads that list with six all-conference players back in Lexington. Still, some will focus on the hole that needs to be filled with the graduation of All-American and ODAC Player of the Year, Haley Tucker. Reigning ODAC Coach of the Year Brooke O'Brien has plenty of talent back to do just that with All-ODAC First Teamers Katherine Faria and Caitlin Anderson leading the way. Faria earned ODAC Rookie of the Year laurels following a strong first season leading W&L's attack, while Anderson secured the ODAC Defensive Player of the Year. Joining them are a trio from the All-ODAC Second Team in attack Landon Shelley, defender Catherine Arrix, and keeper Elliot Gilbert. Attack Dani Murray was an All-ODAC Third Team choice last season.

Shenandoah looks to four all-conference stars to lead the way. Midfielder Alyson Bittinger and defender Emma Hardisky were first team selections, while attack Nikki Zerna and defender Jess Spindler earned second team assignments.

Randolph-Macon, Roanoke, and the University of Lynchburg each welcome back three all-conference honorees. The Yellow Jackets look to first team keeper Elicia Wells as well as second team midfielder Kaylyn Hewes and third team attack Mary Castle. The Maroons are bolstered by first team defender Emerson Foster, second team attack Ellie Armstrong, and third team attack Lilly Blair. The Hornets feature first team defender Allie O'Leary, second team attack Kelsi Trevisan, and third team defender Erin Gardner.

Virginia Wesleyan University and new head coach Nicole DeSalvia welcome back a pair of All-ODAC choices. Midfielder Tori Manahan received second team laurels, while keeper Jordan Moilanen garnered third team recognition.

The remaining all-conference returner dons Guilford College colors. Midfielder Madison Iandoli was a third team choice last season.

For the second straight season, the ODAC women's lacrosse ranks grows by one school. Eastern Mennonite University begins its first season of varsity play as the 11th conference member sponsoring the sport. Head coach Katie Russo is no stranger to the ODAC, having served as a team captain and earned All-ODAC status at Randolph-Macon from 2012-16.

The conference tournament begins with quarterfinal action on Wednesday, April 29. The semifinals and finals will be hosted by the top seed on Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3.
