W&L's Shelley Named IWLCA Division III Scholar-Athlete of the Year

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. --- The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association announced its 2021 Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Monday for Division III, and Washington and Lee recent graduate Landon Shelley (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) garnered the honor.

An attacker who graduated in the spring with a degree in accounting, Shelley was an IWLCA First Team All-America recipient earlier this year. She was also a USA Lacrosse Magazine Second Team All-America honoree, first team all-region, first team all-conference and the ODAC Offensive Player of the Year.

Shelley led the league and was seventh in the nation with 50 assists in 2021. The 50 assists are also the second-most in a single-season in program history. She set the single-season assists record with 53 in 2019. She also had 17 goals this year for 67 points. The 67 points are tied for the 10th-most in a single-season in W&L history.

The Pres Brown Award winner as the school's top female athlete, Shelley broke the program's career assists mark earlier this year and finished her four years with 141 in 61 contests. She also broke the W&L single-game assists record with seven against Virginia Wesleyan on April 17. Shelley ends her career with 59 goals and the 141 assists for 200 points, becoming just the fifth player in program history to reach the 200-point plateau.

Shelley is just the second player in program history to receive the Scholar-Athlete of the Year the honor. Emmy Mathews '11 also garnered the award in 2011.

To receive the accolade, a player must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of athletic eligibility, have at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA, and be a starter or significant reserve for their team.

Mikaela Watson of Stanford earned the honor for Division I, Cathleen Gaffney of Lenoir-Rhyne collected the award for Division II and Tyelar Rohman of Georgetown College received the accolade for NAIA.

The Generals ended the year with a 14-1 overall record and the team went a perfect 8-0 in conference play. The Blue and White won its 11th consecutive ODAC Championship this season and advanced to the regional semifinal in the NCAA Tournament.
