W&L’s Van Devender, RC’s Benne Collect Top W. Soccer Honors

LC's Kwiatkowski Top Rookie, Askey Repeats as Scholar-Athlete

SALEM, Va. --- The annual All-ODAC Women's Soccer voting has ended and this year's top awards have been set.  Washington & Lee University's Anne Van Devender collected the league's Player of the Year award and Roanoke College's Phil Benne was tabbed as the ODAC Coach of the Year.  Lynchburg College's Betsy Kwiatkowski earned ODAC Rookie of the Year honors, and the Hornets' Lauren Askey received her second straight ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete award following a vote of the league's sports information directors.

Van Devender, a junior striker, led the Generals to a 16-4 record, 9-2 in the ODAC.  Washington & Lee entered the ODAC tournament as the #3 seed and made its way to the semifinals, where they fell to Roanoke, 2-1.  Van Devender sat at or near the top of the conference in several categories including points per game (2.22), goals (15), and assists per game (0.56).  She currently sits third in W&L history in both career points (116) and career goals scored (47), and is fourth in career assists (22).  This is the second straight year Van Devender has occupied a spot on the All-ODAC first team.

Benne, in his 19th season as the Maroons head coach, collected his fourth Coach of the Year honor.  He led his Maroons to a 17-3-1 record, 10-1 in the ODAC this season.  His team entered the league tournament as the #2 seed and made their way to the championship game where they fell to Lynchburg, 2-0.  Six of his athletes can be found on the All-ODAC first and second teams and one athlete on the honorable mention list.

Kwiatkowski, an attacking midfielder, was an instant contributor to the Hornets in her first year.  She started all 22 games for LC and finished the season with 20 goals and 10 assists for 50 total points.  She led the league in goals and points.

Askey, who earned the 2006 Scholar-Athlete award, spearheaded a Hornet defense that only allowed five goals this season.  A senior majoring in Athletic Training, Askey boasts a 3.97 cumulative grade point average and has been a member of the Dean's List for every semester of her Lynchburg career.
