Hornets Sweep Women's Soccer Awards

Kwiatkowski, Olsen, Dott, Hammond Honored

FOREST, Va. --- ODAC champion Lynchburg College took home each of the four major individual honors as part of the 2010 All-ODAC Women’s Soccer Teams.  Betsy Kwiatkowski earned ODAC Player of the Year accolades while head coach Dr. Todd Olsen secured the ODAC Coach of the Year award.  Defender Tori Dott was tabbed the ODAC Rookie of the Year, and senior Lauren Hammond was selected as the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete.

The 2010 All-ODAC First Team features a pair of rare occurrences in any ODAC sport.  Both Kwiatkowski and Roanoke College midfielder Jessica Welfare are now four-time honorees on the women’s soccer first team.  The duo has combined to lead their squads to 128 victories (thru Saturday) over the course of the past four years.

Kwiatkowski, a senior from Mount Jackson, Va., has put together a stellar career that began with the league’s top rookie award in 2007.  She currently leads the ODAC with 46 points and 16 assists.  She is second in goals scored with 15.  Kwiatkowski has helped lead the Hornets to the NCAA postseason in each of her four seasons, including a national semifinal showing in 2009 and LC’s upcoming entry into the 2010 NCAA tourney.  With at least one more game to play, Kwiatkowski’s career numbers rank high in the ODAC record books.  She currently sits second in assists (52), fifth in points (174) and tied for ninth in goals scored (61).

Dr. Todd Olsen adds this coaching honor to five previous ODAC top coaching awards, his last coming in 2008.  In his 17th season at Lynchburg, Coach Olsen has led LC to 16 winning seasons and trips to the NCAA tournament in 10 of the last 12 years, including 2010.  During his tenure, the Hornets have posted a 264-76-34 (.751) record.

Dott, a freshman from Sewell, N.J., made an impact from day one on the Hornets’ back line.  She earned her first start against Emory & Henry in late September, and has been a part of the Hornets’ starting 11 ever since.  She stepped forward to notch two goals from her defensive position.  Dott’s efforts have helped LC allow just 13 goals for a conference-best 0.60 team goals-against-average.  Against ODAC opponents, Lynchburg game up just one goal all season until surrendering two in the ODAC championship to Virginia Wesleyan.

Hammond, a senior from Chattanooga, Tenn., is the fourth Hornet to win the women’s soccer scholar-athlete award since 2004.  The sport management major boasts a 3.97 grade-point-average and is a consistent member of the Lynchburg Dean’s List.  She has been a multiple honoree on the All-ODAC Academic Team, and was recently named to the 2010 CoSIDA Academic All-District Second Team.  On the field, Hammond has started all 21 games as part of the Hornets’ potent defense.  She was also a part of the 2009 unit that allowed just 11 goals all season on the way to the national semifinals.  This season, she has also made her way forward to score one goal and assist on two others.
