Marlins Earn Three Special Honors to Lead All-ODAC Women's Soccer Awards

FOREST, Va. --- Bridgewater College and the University of Lynchburg garnered a league-best eight all-conference honors each and ODAC champion Virginia Wesleyan University collected three special individual laurels to headline the 2021 All-ODAC Women's Soccer Awards.

Marlins centerback Sam Crawford earned ODAC Player of the Year status, while longtime VWU mentor Jeff Bowers received ODAC Coach of the Year recognition. Forward Breacain McClenahan took home ODAC Rookie of the Year plaudits to make it three special honors for the Marlins. Washington and Lee defender Chloe Rapier was tabbed the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the conference's athletic communications personnel.

A total of 18 standouts repeat as All-ODAC honorees from the 2021 spring all-conference lists. That includes nine members of the All-ODAC First Team. Bridgewater goalkeeper Sydney Davis and midfielder Hanna Randolph -- the ODAC Player of the Year from the spring campaign -- both appeared on the previous first team chart. The same can be said of VWU's Crawford and midfielder Kennedi Anders as well as Lynchburg holding midfielder Alix Allen and Washington and Lee playmaker Erin Hoeh and Rapier. Eagles defender Maren Dougherty and Generals defender Liz Sullivan moved up from last season's All-ODAC Second Team.

Crawford, a junior from Bensalem, Pa., is now a two-time All-ODAC First Team honoree following a third team selection in 2019. She was tabbed the ODAC Rookie of the Year that season. Crawford possesses a unique combination of strength and speed at the heart of Virginia Wesleyan's defense. She is the talisman of a defensive unit that has tied for a league-best 12 shutouts in 19 games played. VWU has allowed just 12 goals towards a 0.61 goals against average. In ODAC play, the Marlins surrendered just four goals and posted a 0.43 GAA bolstered by six shutouts. In the ODAC Tournament, Crawford helped the Marlins see out a trio of 1-0 victories on the way to the conference championship. Crawford got forward to record her first collegiate point this season as she assisted Emma Acanfora on the second goal in a 2-0 victory at Roanoke on October 9.

Bowers is in the midst of his 22nd season guiding the Marlins women's soccer program. This is the third time he has been honored as the ODAC's top coach, joining the awards he won in 2003 and 2005. Virginia Wesleyan posted an 8-1-1 record during the ODAC regular season, earning the Marlins the top seed in the ODAC Tournament. They used the #1 billing to capture the program's second conference title, joining the trophy they lifted in 2006. The championship is accompanied by the ODAC's automatic entry into the NCAA Division III tournament, which begins this weekend. Entering the 64-team bracket, Virginia Wesleyan is 12-5-2. Bowers' career record stands at 306-102-47 (.725). His 300th career victory came in a 1-0 win at Lynchburg on October 13.

McClenahan, a first-year from Lumberton, N.J., is the Marlins leading scorer with at least one more game to play in her first season in Virginia Beach. She has started 16-of-18 contests and registered 14 points on six goals and two assists. Her most productive stretch so far came over three games in lead-up to the ODAC Tournament. She scored twice in a 3-0 win over Shenandoah and then added one goal each in the next two games including the game-deciding tally in a 3-2 win over Randolph-Macon. McClenahan is credited with scoring two game-winning goals this season.

Rapier, a senior from Chandler, Ariz., pairs this honor with a second straight selection to the All-ODAC First Team. Rapier shines on and off the field for the Generals. In the classroom, she maintains a 3.965 grade point average as a biology and business administration double-major. She is a three-time ODAC All-Academic Team honoree. A W&L Scholar Athlete in all six terms during her career, Rapier was a CoSIDA Academic All-District and United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-Region choice last spring. She works with Washington and Lee Student Consulting (WLSC), which is a student-led organization that provides pro bono consulting services to businesses and not-for-profit community organizations.

On the field, Rapier helped lead a Generals' defensive unit that allowed a league-low 10 goals over 18 games played. That translated to a 0.54 goals against average powered by 10 shutouts. She got forward to score one goal this season as she notched the final tally in a 5-0 win over Guilford in mid-October. She scored five goals in her W&L career.
