W&L Dominates Women's Tennis 1st Team

W&L’s Caire, Ishida, HU’s Montoya, Budrus Garner Individual Honors

SALEM, Va. --- Washington and Lee University placed a student-athlete at each flight of the first team in the 2010 ODAC Women’s Tennis All-Conference Teams.  The Generals’ Lauren Caire was named the ODAC Player of the Year, while W&L’s Eric Ishida took home the top coaching award.  Hollins University saw Karen Montoya tabbed as the ODAC Freshman of the Year and Sarah Budrus honored with the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Award.

Caire, a senior from Nashville, Tenn., went a combined 7-4 in regular season play this spring, including a 3-0 mark against ODAC foes.  She helped the Generals to their 20th overall and ninth straight conference crown as she won at both #1 singles and #1 doubles in the title match against Hollins.  In doubles action, Caire and teammate Ellen Yeatman went 8-2 between the #1 and #2 positions.  Caire is currently rated third in the Atlantic South Region, while she and Yeatman are slotted #2 in the ITA’s regional doubles rankings.

Currently ranked sixth in the nation by the ITA, Washington and Lee has won 20 ODAC titles in 25 seasons, a tradition that has continued under Ishida.  Ishida is in just his third year as the Generals mentor, but each has been accompanied by a conference championship and an ODAC Coach of the Year honor.  Three individual players are currently ranked in the top-25 in the Atlantic South Region including Caire (third), Yeatman (eight) and Ann Morris (25th).

Montoya, hailing from Delicias, Mexico, took to Hollins’ courts immediately as she went 15-1 at #1 singles in her first season at HU.  She was also solid in doubles play as she and partner Mariah Bryant posted a 14-4 record at #2 doubles.  Montoya’s ODAC marks were equally impressive as she went 9-1 in singles and 7-3 in doubles action.  Her efforts helped lead Hollins back to the ODAC title match.

Budrus, a junior from Huntington, W.Va., boasts a 3.84 grade point average while majoring in mathematics.  A captain for Hollins, she is an honoree on the All-ODAC Academic Team, and is an active volunteer with Girls and Sports Day as well as the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.  On the courts, Budrus went 12-3 (8-1 ODAC) at #2 singles and teamed with partner Anne Ailstock to go 11-7 (7-3) at #1 doubles.
