Generals' Ishida, Eagles' Bergey also Honored
FOREST, Va. --- Washington and Lee University
freshman Sonja Meighan took home a pair of individual honors as
part of the 2012 All-ODAC Women's Tennis Teams. She secured
the ODAC Player and Rookie of the Year awards following a stellar
first season in Lexington. The Generals' head coach, Eric
Ishida, was tabbed as the ODAC Coach of the Year, and Bridgewater
College standout Katy Bergey was selected the ODAC/Farm Bureau
Insurance Scholar-Athlete by the league's sports information
directors. Sweet Briar College was honored with the Team
Sportsmanship Award.
Meighan, from McLean, Va., made an immediate impact at the top of
W&L's singles flight by winning the Southeast Regional singles
title in October. She went on to post an 8-2 overall singles
record this spring. She is currently the second rated singles
player in the ITA's Atlantic South Region, posting wins over ranked
opponents from Johns Hopkins (Elaine Baik), DePauw (Kelly Gebert),
Carnegie Mellon (Laura Chen and Katie Cecil), and Mary Washington
(Lindsay Raulston). In doubles play, Meighan registered an
overall record of 9-4, including a 5-0 mark with partner Meghan
Buell.
Ishida, in his fifth season at W&L, helped lead the Generals
to their 22nd overall and 10th straight ODAC team championship,
including all five during his tenure. The Generals are
currently ranked third in the Atlantic South Region and fifth in
the ITA's national poll. For the second straight year,
W&L student-athletes earned honors at each of the singles and
doubles flights on the All-ODAC First Team.
Bergey, a sophomore from Harrisonburg, Va., excelled both on and
off the court for the Eagles. In the classroom, Bergey
maintains a 3.931 grade point average as a Business major.
She is a three-time honoree on the Bridgewater College Dean's List,
and is a member of the All-ODAC Academic Team. On the court,
Bergey adds this honor to All-ODAC First Team laurels at #2 singles
and All-ODAC Second Team accolades at #1 doubles ( with Katie
Gordon). She posted a 13-3 overall singles record, including
a 9-1 mark in ODAC play. In doubles action, she and Gordon
went 12-5 at #1 doubles, 8-2 in league matches.
