Washington and Lee Headlines ODAC Women's Tennis Preseason Poll

Washington and Lee Headlines ODAC Women's Tennis Preseason Poll

Bridgewater, Randolph-Macon Eclipse 100 Points

FOREST, Va. --- Washington and Lee University, winner of 15 straight ODAC titles, sits perched atop the ODAC Women's Tennis Preseason Poll, conducted annually by the league's head coaches. The Generals earned 121 points with a full allotment of 10 first place votes. Bridgewater College takes up position in second place with 104 tallies, while Randolph-Macon College rounds out the top-three after picking up 100 points including the remaining top nod.

The Generals continued their dominance in women's tennis in 2017, claiming the program's 27th overall conference crown. W&L ran thru the tournament bracket with a trio of 5-0 victories over Hollins University, Bridgewater, and Randolph-Macon. For the Yellow Jackets, it marked their second straight runner-up finish.

The victory awarded the Generals an automatic bid into the NCAA team tournament and a trip to Sewanee for early round action. The nationally 12th-ranked and regionally third-rated squad opened with a 5-3 victory over host Sewanee. W&L's team campaign came to an abrupt end to nationally second-ranked Emory University via a 5-1 result.

The season continued in the Division III singles and doubles tournament for ITA All-Americans Brooke Donnelly and Tessa Hill. The duo suffered an early-round loss to Williams College, 6-1, 6-4, in the doubles competition, but Donnelly carried on a bit further in the singles event. She won twice over opponents from Hope College and Bowdoin College before bowing outing in the quarterfinals to Emory's Bridget Harding.

The Kennesaw, Ga., native will be missed by the Generals in the 2018 spring season. Donnelly graduated with a vault full of honors including ODAC Player of the Year, two-time ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete, Marjorie Berkley Award, and two-time NCAA Elite 90 Award winner. Arguably her greatest honor came this past fall in being named a top-30 honoree in the NCAA Woman of the Year competition.

The cupboard certainly isn't bare for head coach Erin Ness despite Donnelly's graduation as the Generals enter the spring season ranked 12th in the country and third in the Atlantic South Region by the ITA. W&L players represent a league-high six awards of the 22 returning All-ODAC honors from a season ago. That list doesn't include Hill or Lauren Hassell, who is one-half of the nationally 16th-ranked doubles tandem with Michelle Fleenor. Fleenor earned All-ODAC Second Team laurels at #1 singles in 2017.

W&L features five returning singles players from the All-ODAC First Team. Hannah Archer and Melinda Kauffman earned selections at #2 and #3 singles, while Anna Kreynin, Maddie Hutchins, and DeeDee Aeschliman were the coaches' choices at #4, #5, and #6 singles.

Lynchburg College and new head coach Chris Johnson welcome back Christina Harris, who earned a pair of first team honors last season. She joined Donnelly at #1 singles and returns to the Hornets roster along with her first team #1 doubles teammate Lilli Altenburg.

Bridgewater welcomes back a trio of first team selections, each part of doubles teams. Jamiah Lewis and Shannon Quinn teamed up to garner honors at #2 doubles, while Stephanie Barton will be looking for a new partner after picking up laurels at #3 doubles.

Randolph College welcomes back the first team #1 doubles pairing of Aubrey Hawn and Keyu Jin. The remaining first team accolade belongs to Gaby Tersigni, who returns to Randolph-Macon after picking up recognition at #2 singles.

The 2018 spring season begins with non-conference play on the weekend of Saturday, February 3. The first set of ODAC contests are slated for Saturday, February 17. The ODAC Tournament is slated to begin Tuesday, May 1 with quarterfinal action at the four highest seeds. The semifinals and finals will be held at Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday and Sunday, May 5-6.
