Generals Enter NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- Washington and Lee University will carry the ODAC banner into the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Tournament, as announced by the NCAA on Monday afternoon. This season's national field is 49 teams large.

Like the Generals, 40 schools won their conference tournaments, awarding them automatic qualification into the field. One was allotted to true independent teams (or those playing in conference's without an AQ) in "Pool B," while the remaining eight spots went to at-large selections in "Pool C."

Washington and Lee (15-7) will be playing in a five-team pod for the first three rounds at Emory University. The first round contest of the group features N.C. Wesleyan College (15-4) and Hanover College (12-0). NCWC earned its spot by winning the USA South championship, while Hanover claimed the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) title. The winner of that match will meet the host Eagles (17-3) in the second round.

Like Emory, which won the University Athletic Association (UAA), Washington and Lee will not play until the second round. The Generals meet Sewanee in their opener. The Tigers (21-8) won the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) crown. The winner of the two second round matches will meet the following day in the third round for a shot at the quarterfinal round.

Early round action is set for the weekend of May 9-12 with days of play based on the location. The eight teams that come out of pod play will head to Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Mich., on May 20-22 for the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds and ultimately the championship match.

Game times and ticket information will be announced later this week. For more information, visit the websites of any of the participating schools.
