W&L Triumphs Over TCNJ in NCAA Second Round

LEXINGTON, Va. --- The 18th-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team used a 5-1 victory over The College of New Jersey on Saturday to advance to the third round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship.
 
The Generals improve to 15-2 overall with the win, and deal the Lions their first loss of the season (11-1).
 
W&L took two of the three doubles matches to go into singles play with a 2-1 lead. Junior Taylor Garcia (Mandeville, La. / Mount Carmel Academy) and first-year Margaret Carlton (Matthews, N.C. / Charlotte Christian) claimed an 8-4 victory at No. 1, while first-years Kaitlyn Chalker (Kennesaw, Ga. / Rivers Academy) and Nell Covington (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) earned an 8-7 (7-4) victory at No. 3.
 
Carlton collected her second victory of the day at No. 5 to lead off singles play. She defeated Anusha Rangu by a score of 6-2, 6-0. Sophomore Becket Waters (Raleigh, N.C. / Needham B. Broughton) and first-year Gabi Moss (Paradise Valley, Ariz. / Chaparral) then completed their singles matches within seconds of each other to close out the match. Waters triumphed over Alexa Vasile, 6-4, 6-1, while Moss cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Katrine Luddy.
 
The Generals will take on No. 24 Denison on Sunday in the third round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship at 12:00 pm on the W&L Upper Courts.
