2011 Women's Tennis Players of the Week

  • KATIE GORDON, Bridgewater, Freshman, No. 1 Singles, No. 1 Doubles

    Gordon, a freshman from Winchester, Va., turned in a strong week for the Bridgewater Eagles women’s tennis team, propelling the Eagles to a 2-1 week, including a victory in Sunday’s ODAC Quarterfinal matchup against Guilford. Gordon opened the week with a loss to Roanoke’s Laura Dodson by a 6-3, 7-5 tally, before recovering for a 6-1, 7-5 win over 2010 ODAC first teamer Karen Montoya (Hollins) on Thursday. Gordon closed out the week with a 6-0, 6-1 win to help propel the Eagles to a 5-1 victory over Guilford. On the week, Gordon went 2-1 in doubles play with freshman teammate Katy Bergey at number one doubles.
  • ARIEL TAYLOR, Sweet Briar, Freshman, No. 1 Singles, No. 1 Doubles

    Taylor, a freshman from Springfield, Va., picks up her second weekly honor after a week that included a pair of singles wins over regionally-ranked opponents. Taylor, competing at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles over the past week, went 4-0 overall in singles action and 2-2 in doubles play. She opened the week with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Washington and Lee's Lauren Lukas, currently the 19th-ranked singles player in the Atlantic South Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Taylor continued her week with singles and doubles victories over Emory & Henry (6-1, 6-0 and 8-4) and Southern Virginia (6-1, 6-1 and 8-2). She capped her week with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Courtney Goimarac from Mary Washington, the 17th-rated player in the region. For the season, Taylor tops the ODAC singles win-loss records with a 15-0 mark, all from the No. 1 ladder position. She is currently ranked 20th in the region. The new ITA rankings are set to be released on April 14.
  • JEN SYNDER, Washington and Lee, Junior, No. 3 Singles, No. 2 Doubles

    Snyder, a junior from Highland Heights, Ohio, helped lead the No. 9 Generals to a 6-3 win over No. 8 Carnegie Mellon on Saturday at the Duchossois Tennis Center. Playing No. 3 singles, Snyder defeated CMU’s Alexandra Tapak in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. In doubles, she partnered with junior Ellen Yeatman to top the CMU duo of Jennifer Chui and Alexandra Tapak, 8-2, for W&L’s only doubles victory of the match.
  • BRITTANY WILSON, Bridgewater, Freshman, No. 4 Singles, No. 3 Doubles

    Wilson, a freshman from Lynchburg, Va., remained hot in the Spring with a 3-0 week at No. 4 singles and a perfect 3-0 week in No. 3 doubles to help pace the Bridgewater Eagles to an unbeaten week in women’s tennis action. She opened the week with a 6-2, 7-5 win against Southern Virginia, before rolling to a 6-2, 6-1 win against the Vixens of Sweet Briar. Finally, Wilson earned a 7-5, 6-0 win on Saturday against Virginia Wesleyan. Wilson also teamed with Olivia Stone to go unbeaten in doubles action with 8-3, 8-4 and 8-1 victories, respectively. Currently, the freshman is riding a 10 match unbeaten streak in singles play, and a six match winning streak in doubles action.
  • ARIEL TAYLOR, Sweet Briar, Freshman, No. 1 Singles, No. 1 Doubles

    Taylor, a freshman from Springfield, Va., helped the Vixens to a trio of 8-1 team victories by going undefeated at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. Taylor opened with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Richard Stockton's top competitor, and followed that up with 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-0 results over Millsaps' and Concordia's No. 1 singles players. Taylor and partner Moriah Burke surrendered just three points in doubles action, defeating their top ladder opponents 8-2, 8-0 and 8-1. Taylor is currently the 20th rated singles player in the Atlantic South Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). She and Burke sit ninth in the ITA's Atlantic South Region doubles rankings.
  • MARTHA VLAHAKIS, Randolph-Macon, Senior, No. 1 Singles, No. 1 Doubles

    Vlahakis, a senior from Rockville, Md., posted three singles and three doubles victories over the past week, helping the Yellow Jackets to a 4-0 showing and extending R-MC's team winning streak to five matches. Playing for the top ladder position, Vlahakis top her counterparts from Mary Baldwin, Ferrum and McDaniel, while combining with her teammate to sweep her opponents at No. 1 doubles. Vlahakis' only setback came in the beginning of the week due to retirement at No. 1 singles against Virginia Union.
  • CHRISTINA DOUGLAS, Washington and Lee, Sophomore, No. 1 Singles, No. 2 Doubles

    Douglas, a sophomore from Fayetteville, N.Y., helped Washington and Lee to a trio of ODAC wins over the weekend, surrendering just three points in No. 1 singels and No. 2 doubles action. She and teammate Kerry Cotter topped Randolph-Macon's #2 duo, 8-1, followed by victories over Emory & Henry (8-0) and Virginia Wesleyan (8-2). She also won from the top singles spot against the Wasps, topping Ashley Wingate 6-0, 6-0. She was also leading VWC's Saida Bennou, 5-0, when the Marlin retired in-set.
  • SARAH BUDRUS, Hollins, Senior, No. 2 Singles, No. 2 Doubles

    Budrus, a senior from Huntington, W.Va., went 3-0 over the past week, including wins over a pair of ODAC squads. Competing at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles, Budrus lost just 10 points between the two arenas, covering nine sets of play (six singles sets). She topped singles opponents from Mary Baldwin (6-0, 6-0), Emory & Henry (6-1, 6-0) and Guilford (6-3, 6-1). She won in doubles during each match, posting 8-0, 8-1 and 8-4 wins, respectively.
  • ELLEN YEATMAN, Washington and Lee, Junior, No. 1 Singles, No. 1 Doubles

    Yeatman, a junior from Little Rock, Ark, went a perfect 2-0 at singles and 2-0 at doubles as W&L swept both Lynchburg and Bridgewater by scores of 9-0 on Saturday. In singles, Yeatman defeated Bridgewater’s Katie Gordon, 6-1, 6-3 and Lynchburg’s Clare Wallendjack by a score of 6-1, 6-0.
