2016 Women's Tennis Players of the Week

  • Tessa Hill, Washington and Lee, Fr., #2 Singles, #1 Doubles

    Hill, a freshman from Canton, Ohio, participated in all six of Washington and Lee's matches last week, going 10-0 between #2 singles and #1 doubles in the process. The Generals went 5-1 during that stretch. In singles action, the 11th-ranked player in the ITA's Atlantic South Region won 6-1, 6-0 over Christopher Newport and then trounced the nation's 29th-ranked player, John Hopkins' Megumi Chen, 6-4, 6-2. She followed that with a win over Randolph-Macon, 6-2, 6-2, and then capped her singles performances with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Virginia Wesleyan. In doubles play, Hill and partner Brooke Donnelly form the 22nd-ranked team in the NCAA Division III. They went 6-0, picking wins over CNU (8-4), JHU (8-4), R-MC (8-0), VWC (8-0), Shenandoah (8-0), and Emory & Henry (8-2). Hill is currently 11-5 overall this spring in singles action, including 6-0 against ODAC foes. She and Donnelly are 14-3 in doubles player overall and 7-0 in league play.
  • Kelsie Grice, Randolph-Macon, Jr., #1 Singles, #2 Doubles

    Grice, a junior Hoover, Ala., helped the regionally 14th-ranked Yellow Jackets to a pair of ODAC wins to remain unbeaten this spring. Grice won both of her #1 singles matches against Bridgewater and Virginia Wesleyan, securing 6-0, 6-0 scores in both contests. She and teammate Gaby Tersigni won 8-3 and 8-1 at #2 doubles, helping R-MC to final team wins of 8-1 and 9-0, respectively.
  • Sveva Mazzari, Emory & Henry, Fr., #1 Singles, #1 Doubles

    Mazzari, a freshman from San Remo, Italy, helped Emory & Henry to a 1-1 team showing by going 4-0 between her matches at #1 singles and #1 doubles. Mazzari was responsible for two points in the Wasps' 6-0 victory over Virginia Wesleyan. She won 6-0, 6-1 in singles action, and then partner with Savanna Summers to win 8-0 in doubles play. The duo were back at it against Randolph-Macon as they posted an 8-6 triumph over Randolph-Macon. Mazzari took the top flight singles match as well, winning 6-0, 6-2. Mazzari is now 12-0 in all singles matches and 10-2 overall in doubles play. She and Summers are 8-1 when paired together.
  • Michelle Fleenor, Washington and Lee, So., #2/3 Singles, #1/2 Doubles

    Fleenor, a sophomore from Chattanooga, Tenn., helped keep the 13th-ranked Generals rolling with two more wins last week, including an ODAC triumph and a national-ranked showdown. Fleenor competed at #3 singles and #2 doubles as the Generals took down nationally 18th-ranked Mary Washington, 5-4, to start the week. Fleenor defeated the 41st-rated singles player in the country, Shelby Harris, 7-6, 6-4. She and Rachel Hicks scored an 8-4 victory in doubles action. Fleenor moved to #2 singles and #1 doubles in the Generals 6-3 win over Roanoke. She won 6-2, 6-0 in singles play and joined Brooke Donnelly for an 8-1 doubles win.

    Donnelly, a junior from Kennesaw, Ga., put together an unbeaten week against ODAC and national top-flight competition. In a 9-0 team victory over Bridgewater, Donnelly won 6-0, 6-1 at #1 singles and joined Tessa Hill for an 8-0 victory at #1 doubles. Washington and Lee, ranked 13th in the country by the ITA, then squared off with #11 Carnegie Mellon. Despite a 5-4 team setback between, Donnelly pulled out a pair of wins. Donnelly, rated 27th in the country and sixth in the Atlantic South Region, took down #16/4 Brooke Tsu 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 in singles play. Donnelly and Hill then claimed an 8-2 triumph over Minami Makino and Cori Sidell in doubles action.

    Hill, a freshman from Canton, Ohio, helped Washington and Lee to a 2-1 week that included a pair of matches against nationally-ranked competition. Hill went 2-1 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles action, teaming with Brooke Donnelly at the top flight. Hill and Donnelly won 8-3 over Sumvruta Iyengar and Melanie Martin in W&L's 9-0 win over Texas-Dallas. The W&L duo posted a 9-8 triumph over Madie Benn and Michelle Fuca in the Generals' 8-1 triumph over 17th-ranked Skidmore. Hill and Donnelly's final match came agaisnt nationally top-ranked Williams, where the due fell 9-7 to the 2015 #1 tandem and the 2016 sixth-ranked pairing of Juli Raventos and Linda Shin. Hill claimed a 4-6, 6-1, 10-6 comeback victory over UTD's Sophie Farmer in #2 singles play. She then bested Skidmore's Benn 5-7, 6-3, 10-7 in a second #1 singles come-from-behind effort. She finished the week with a 6-1, 6-0 loss to 25th-ranked Mia Gancayco from Williams.

    Gonzalez, a senior from Siler City, N.C., helped the Quakers to a pair of team wins over Averett (5-4) and Shenandoah (6-3) last week. Gonzalez posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at #4 singles against the Cougars, while teaming with Leigh Fishman for an 8-6 victory at #2 doubles. Agaisnt SU, she added a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at #3 singles, while she and Fishman earned an 8-5 decision at #2 doubles. For the year, Gonzalez is 4-1 in singles play and 2-4 in doubles action.

    Lee, a sophomore from Jacksonville, Fla., helped the Maroons to a pair of wins over NCAA Division II opponents as they kicked off play in the Spring Break Tennis Fest in Hilton Head, S.C. Lee won a pair of singles matches, including one from the top flight to help Roanoke to a 6-3 win over East Stroudsburg University (Pa.). She won 7-6, 6-2, over Amber Jadus. Lee then powered her way to a 6-4, 7-6, triumph over Sarah Robbins at #3 singles in RC's 9-0 victory over Clarion.
  • Brooke Donnelly, Washington and Lee, Sr., #1 Singles/#1 Doubles

    Donnelly, a junior from Kennesaw, Ga., picks up her second straight weekly honor that including a 2-0 mark at #1 singles and a 2-1 record at #1 doubles. Donnelly's singles efforts included a 6-4, 6-4, triumph over Ashnaa Rao from Johns Hopkins, the second-rated player in NCAA Division III by the ITA. Donnelly also took down Maddie Lee from DePauw, 6-0, 6-1. In doubles play, she and Tessa Hill topped JHU's Rao and Mikey Barthelmass, 9-8, and then trounced DePauw's Lee and Gretchen Wilder, 9-7. The Generals' duo suffered an 8-2 setback to Grace Deering and Jamie Silverberg from Washington University (Mo.).
  • Brooke Donnelly, Washington and Lee, Sr., #1 Singles/#1 Doubles

    Donnelly, a junior from Kennesaw, Ga., kicked off the spring season by winning a pair of top flight singles matches in the Generals team victories over Hollins and Randolph. Donnelly earned a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over her HU counterpart, and did one better with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Randolph. She and doubles partner Tessa Hill posted a pair of 8-0 victories in #1 doubles action. Donnelly is currently the 27th-ranked individual player in the Oracle/ITA Division III Women's Rankings. She and Hill are slotted 22nd in the country.
