2019 Women's Tennis Players of the Week

  • Whitney Kiser, Bridgewater, Jr.

    Kiser, a junior from Mt. Solon, Va., picked up her second weekly award of the year as she went a combined 6-0 to help the Eagles close the regular season with a 2-1 mark against league foes. Kiser earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at #1 singles and joined Nicole Shifflett for an 8-0 triumph at #1 doubles in Bridgewater's 7-2 victory over Shenandoah. Kiser accounted for two more points as the Eagles scratched out a 5-4 win at a neutral site over Emory & Henry. She and Emily Daigneault won 8-6 at #2 doubles, while Kiser picked up 6-0, 6-1 victory at #1 singles. Kiser accounted for two of BC's points in a 6-3 setback to Virginia Wesleyan. She and Shifflett paired up for an 8-3 win at #1 doubles. Kiser added a 6-3, 6-4 victory at #1 singles.

    Wright, a first-year from Ausitn Texas, helped the 22nd-ranked Generals to a 4-1 overall record last week, including a 4-0 mark in ODAC play, by going 3-1 in doubles and 4-0 in singles matches. Wright and Taylor Garcia teamed up in No. 1 doubles in four of the team's five matches, and defeated Roanoke's Jessica Kennedy and Madeline Herring, 8-1, Emory & Henry's Katie Meade and Kaitlyn Sheaves, 8-0, and Bridgewater's Whitney Kiser and Nicole Shifflett, 8-3. Their lone loss of the week came at No. 10 Carnegie Mellon on Saturday, when they fell, 8-1, to the second-ranked duo of Danna Taylor and Melissa Strome. In singles, Wright downed E&H's Sheaves, 6-0, 6-0, and RC's Carolyn Kitsock, 6-0, 6-1, both in the No. 2 slot. She then earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kiser in No. 1 singles, before ending her week with a 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (10-8) win over CMU's Vinaya Rao in No. 3 singles. Wright now owns a 12-6 overall singles record this season, the most singles wins on the team, and is 12-7 in all doubles matches, including a 9-5 mark with Garcia as her partner.

    Anderson, a first-year from Norfolk, Va., put together a combined 4-0 week between singles and doubles play to help Lynchburg rack up a pair of ODAC teams wins. The Hornets have won five of their last six matches and sit 11-2 overall. In a 7-2 victory over Randolph, Anderson won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. She joined Reagan Coon for an 8-2 triumph at No. 3 doubles. Anderson took stepped up in ladder position in a 5-0 win over Sweet Briar. She won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and then joined Christina Harris for an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles. Anderson is on a seven-match singles winning streak and is 10-2 in dual singles matches this season.
  • Ashley Schmitz, Randolph, Jr.

    Schmitz, a junior from Keswick, Va., helped the WildCats go 2-0 win ODAC play with a pair of 5-4 wins over Roanoke and Virginia Wesleyan. That extended Randolph's winning streak to eight straight matches. Schmitz was a perfect 4-0 combined in singles and doubles play. She posted a 6-3, 6-3 win at #2 singles against Roanoke. She joined Keyu Jin for an 8-5 victory at #1 doubles versus the Maroons. Against VWU, Schmitz won 7-5, 6-1 at #2 singles and against paired with Jin for an 8-4 triumph at #1 doubles. Schmitz is now 11-2 in singles play at the second ladder position and is 7-1 with Jin in doubles matches.
  • Keyu Jin, Randolph, Jr.
    April 01, 2019
    Jin, a junior from Kunming, China, helped the WildCats extend their team winning streak to six matches by going 4-0 between singles and doubles action in a pair of ODAC contests last week. In a 9-0 win over Sweet Briar, Jin picked up a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles and joined Ashley Schmitz for an 8-5 triumph at No. 1 doubles. Randolph again blanked an ODAC opponent later in the week with a 9-0 victory over Guilford. Jin went unblemished in at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, and teamed with Schmitz for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Jin is currently 10-1 in singles play and 3-1 with Schmitz in doubles action.

    Kiser, a junior from Mt. Solon, Va., helped the Eagles to a 1-1 week by going 2-0 in singles action and 2-0 in doubles play with partner Nicole Shifflet. Kiser was responsible for two of Bridgewater's three points in a 6-3 setback to Southern Virginia. She won 6-0, 6-4 at #1 singles and joined Shifflett for a hard-fought 8-7 victory at #1 doubles. Kiser again picked two points in the second match of the week, helping the Eagles to a 7-2 triumph over Ferrum. Kiser worked her way to a 6-1, 5-6, 6-2 win at #1 singles and paired with Shifflett for an 8-0 shutout at #1 doubles.
  • Christina Harris, Lynchburg, Jr.
    March 18, 2019
    Harris, a junior from Falls Church, Va., helped the Hornets rattle of a pair of victories last week. Harris went 2-0 at #1 singles and 2-0 at #1 doubles with partner Caroline Guill. Both of Harris' points were needed in a 5-4 victory over Mount Union. She won 6-1, 1-6, 1-0 (5) in singles action and joined Guill for an 8-1 victory in doubles play. In a more comfortable 8-1 team victory over Millikin, Harris earned a 6-0, 6-1 decision in singles play and partnered with Guill for a tighter 8-6 win in doubles competition.
  • Taylor Garcia, Washington and Lee, Fy.
    March 11, 2019
    Garcia a first-year from Mandeville, La., helped the Generals to a 1-1 record in two of the three team matches played last week. She earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Virginia Wesleyan's Christine Zalameda in No. 1 singles and paired with first-year Georgia Wright in No. 1 doubles to claim an 8-2 win over Audrey Bally and Katie Staman. Garcia also secured one of the team's two points against Division I Longwood on Saturday, as she and Wright defeated Yulia Almiron and Jamie Breunig, 8-4, in No. 1 doubles. Garcia finished the week with a 3-0 record between doubles and singles, and is now 5-3 in singles competition this season and 4-4 in doubles.

    Harris, a junior from Falls Church, Va., helped the Hornets to a pair of 9-0 team victories over St. Mary's (Md.) and Guilford. Harris posted a pair of #1 singles victories, winning 6-0, 6-0 over SMC's Claire Bodine and 6-1, 6-0 over GC's Makayla McLaurin. Harris and partner Caroline Guill won twice at #1 doubles, picking up 8-0 and 8-1 victories, respectively. Harris is ranked 32nd in the nation on the ITA's singles charts, the only ODAC player currently ranked.

    Wright, a first-year from Austin, Texas, helped lead the Generals to the first ODAC and overall team victory of the spring season with a 9-0 triumph over Randolph College. Wright, competing out of the top ladder position for the first time this season, earned a 6-4, 6-4 singles victory over Keyu Jin. She then joined Anna Kreynin for an 8-2 triumph at #2 doubles. Wright is now 5-3 in all singles competitions this year, including a 3-0 mark in dual matches.

    February 18, 2019
    Kennedy, a sophomore from Wise, Va., opened the spring season with a pair of wins to helped Roanoke to a 9-0 team triumph over Guilford. Kennedy joined teammate Lucy Collins for an 8-1 triumph at #1 doubles over Delaney Taylor and Makayla McLaurin. Kennedy went on to post a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over McLaurin at #1 singles.
