R-MC's Carter, VWC's Guy Named AVCA All-Americans

Duo Joined by Yellow Jackets' Puryear on All-Region List

FOREST, Va. --- Randolph-Macon College outside hitter and 2012 ODAC Player of the Year, Mallory Carter, was joined by Virginia Wesleyan College All-ODAC First Team outside hitter, Kala Guy, in earning recognition as Honorable Mention All-Americans by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).  The senior duo was joined by R-MC middle hitter Tori Puryear on the All-South Region list.

Carter, from Mosely, Va., appears on the AVCA Honorable Mention All-American list for the second straight year.  She was twice named All-ODAC First Team (2011-12) and was a part of three Randolph-Macon conference championship squads (2009-11).  This season, Carter racked up 385 kills, which was third most in the ODAC and the third highest in the R-MC single season record book.  Her 50 overall service aces ranked third in the ODAC (0.48 per game).  Defensively, Carter had 260 digs in 2012, leading the way to 11 double-doubles (double-digit kills and digs).  She finisher her career in Ashland with a school-record 1,422 kills, which stands ninth in ODAC history.  Carter also registered 214 aces, which is second all-time at R-MC and seventh overall in the ODAC record books.  Her 1,234 career digs are the sixth-most in Yellow Jacket history.

Guy, from Fishersville, Va., makes her first appearance on an AVCA All-American list.  She is a three-time All-ODAC First Team honoree (2010-12), having finished second in the conference in kills (416) this past season, the most in a single-season in VWC history.  She also picked up 310 digs to go with 42 aces and 40 assists.  Guy became the fourth VWC volleyball player to crack the 1,000-kill plateau this season.  She ended her tenure at Virginia Wesleyan with 1,245 kills to place atop the Marlins' career record books.

Puryear, a junior from Madison, Va., made the jump from the All-ODAC Third Team in 2011 to the first team in 2012.  The Yellow Jackets' middle racked up 76 total blocks including an ODAC second-best 26 block solos.  She hit at a .317 clip, good for fifth in the conference, and collected 203 kills.
