Cross Country Regional Recap: Sparks Wins, Lynchburg Gets At-Large Bids

SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- ODAC cross country has that spark...Max Sparks, to be exact.

The University of Lynchburg standout and ODAC men's individual champion again stood atop the final results as he won the men's crown to highlight the conference's showing at the NCAA Division III Region VI Championships hosted at the Roger Milliken Center in Spartanburg, S.C.

The news got better on Sunday afternoon as Lynchburg, who finished second in both the men's eight-kilometer and women's six-kilometer races, earned a pair of at-large team bids to next weekend's NCAA Division III Championships in E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. Additionally, two women's runners qualified for nationals directly from their regional performances.

The NCAA championship fields are determined from a slate of qualifiers at the 10 regional events hosted across the country. For each gender, the winning seven-person team from each regional earns automatic entry. An additionall 22 teams were selected at-large by the Division III Cross Country Championships Committee. Once the 32 teams for each gender are determined, another 70 individuals earn entry to the field. From each region, the highest-placing seven individuals NOT on one of the 32 qualifying teams also joins the national picture.

Below is a breakdown of each race and the details surrounding NCAA Championship qualification.

WOMEN'S REGIONAL VI ROUND-UP

Lynchburg finished second to Emory University in the team standings following competition on the 6K course. The Eagles collected 31 points, while the Hornets had a score of 54. Washington and Lee University placed third with 116 tallies.

The Hornets' Stephanie Burnett finished second overall at 22:43.8, with only Emory's Annika Urban (21:43.1) between her and the top spot. Lynchburg teammate and ODAC individual champion Kelsey Lagunas chimed in fourth at 22:48.4. ODAC Rookie of the Meet, Allison Dell, placed 11th at 23.34.9. Lynchburg's remaining two scoring runners were Sarah James and Jackie Wilson, who posted respective times of 23:32.5 and 23:52.1 to place 14th and 23rd.

Washington and Lee's Carolyn Todd and Shenandoah University's Erin Atkinson earned places in the national field as individual qualifiers from Region VI. Todd placed 15th at 23:36.7, while Atkinson chimed in 17th at 23:39.9.

MEN'S REGION VI ROUND-UP

Lynchburg, which was without one of its top runners (Frank Csorba) due to injury, finished second to Emory University in the men's standings. The Eagles collected just 47 place points compared to 80 markers for the second place Hornets. Washington and Lee was the next best ODAC team in the table at 141 points for fifth pace.

Sparks won the men's race by six seconds over Southern Virginia University's Dylan May at 25:17.8. It is the third major meet win for the Hornets men joining individual medals at the ODAC Championships by Sparks at the Inter-Reigonal Border Battle hosted by Rowan University for Csorba.

Sam Llaneza, Connor McCroy, Brennan Straits, and Sam Graham joined Sparks as Lynchburg's scoring runners. Llaneza placed eighth at 25:37.2, while McCroy stopped the watches 14th at 25:58.3. Straits finished 27th at 26:40.8, and Graham posted the 30th-best time at 26:45.9.
