Hamdpen-Sydney Goes Low, Two Tied Atop Individual Leaderboard at ODAC Men's Golf

Roanoke's Sean Furlong (left) and Lynchburg's Eddie Coffren fired 3-under par 68's to tied for the individual lead following the first round at the ODAC Men's Golf Championships on Saturday.

CROZET, Va. --- The first day of the ODAC Men's Golf Championships was eventful if not surprising following 18 holes at Old Trail Golf Club in Crozet, Va. Hampden-Sydney College, ranked 19th in NCAA Division III by Golfstat, owns a five shot advantage over Roanoke College after first round totals of 282 and 287, respectively.

A pair of first-year players sit tied atop the individual leaderboard. University of Lynchburg's Eddie Coffren V is just by Roanoke's Sean Furlong at 3-under par 68 with the latter golfer spearheading a strong effort from the Maroons that has them one shot ahead of Lynchburg in the team table.

The remaining two rounds of the tournament will be played under an alter format with weather expected on Sunday. The 11 ODAC teams will play off split tees at 8:00 a.m. ET on Saturday with half the field starting on hole #1 and the other on #10. Additionally, they will play the remaining 36 holes on Saturday with the same tee time rotation used for the third round.

Coffren, rated 17th in Division III by Golfstat, came on late to draw even with Furlong. Coffren went out in 36 with three birdies offset by three bogeys, but he came in with a 32 powered by three birdies and an eagle to post his 68 on the par 71 layout set to 6,810 yards. Furlong's card was a little less volatile. He carded three birdies on the front, but a double-bogey on #6 left him at 1-under after nine holes. He posted three more birdies over the final nine, but left with a sour taste after bogeying #18 to post his 3-under score.

Hampden-Sydney had a banner day with all five players shooting 73 or better and ranking 14th or higher on the leaderboard. Hunter Martin, John Hatcher Ferguson, and Trevor Elliott are all tied for third at 1-under 70. Alex Rubino sits seventh at 1-over 72, while Meade Slonaker is tied for 14th at 2-over 73.
