W&L's Men, Lynchburg's Women Capture ODAC Indoor Track & Field Titles

SALEM, Va. --- A half-dozen new records were set and eight events featured repeat champions as ODAC student-athletes completed two days of competition at the ODAC Indoor Track & Field Championships. Washington and Lee University captured its fourth straight and 10th overall men's team title, while the University of Lynchburg hoisted its second straight and ODAC-best 11th women's team trophy.

Washington and Lee won four events on the way to 153 points to top the men's team standings. Lynchburg finished second with 141 points, while Bridgewater College chimed in third with 123 markers. The winning margin was closer in the women's ledger with Lynchburg collected 158.5 points to best the Generals' 153 tallies. Roanoke College, host of this season's meet at the Kerr-Cregger Field House for a fourth straight year, placed third with 102 points.

Individually, Bridgewater's Davonta Womack and Lynchburg's Reid Sharkey earned the men's Field and Track Athletes of the Meet, respectively. Womack won the long jump for a third straight season with a new meet record distance of 7.36 meters. He also won the 60-meter dash for a third time in 6.82-seconds, but set the championship record in the prelims at 6.78-seconds. Sharkey won the mile for the second time in as any seasons at 4:26.05, and added the 800-meter run title in 8:49.98.

Virginia Wesleyan University's Jaylyn Lane and Bridgewater's English Jackson earned the women's Field and Track Athletes of the Meet. Lane set new ODAC overall and meet records in the triple jump with a leap of 11.69 meters. She also placed second in the long jump (5.03m) and won the 60-meter dash in 7.89-seconds. Jackson won the 5,000-meter run with a new meet-record time of 17:35.81 and placed second in the 3,000-meter run at 10:23.67.

VWU's Geni Roberts and Washington and Lee's Sara Stephenson earned ODAC Rookie of the Year honors. Roberts won the men's triple jump at 14.43 meters and finished fourth in the long jump at 6.71 meters. Stephenson, who won the ODAC women's cross country individual crown in the fall, placed second in the mile run at 5:18.52 and third in the 3,000-meter run at 10:31.94.

W&L's Brandon Uhl and Lynchburg's Jim Sprecher took home ODAC Men's and Women's Coach of the Year laurels, respectively. Bridgewater's Calista Ariel and Lynchburg's Shawn Gmurek earned the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors for the second time. Both received the same recognition following the 2019 cross country championships.

Washington and Lee's Joe O'Connor accounted for the remaining broken record during one of his three event victories. He cleared 4.83 meters in the pole vault to win the discipline for a second straight season and set a new ODAC championship record. He also placed first in the high jump at 1.95 meters and stopped the watches first in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.37-seconds.

In addition to Womack, Sharkey, and O'Connor, four women's competitors repeated as event champions. Roanoke's Jayna Jean-Jules won the weight throw for a third time with a heave of 15.51 meters. Lynchburg's Sammi Woods won a second straight shot put crown with a toss of 12.71 meters. Bridgewater's Ariel repeated as the 3,0000-meter run champion in 10:17.95, and Washington and Lee's Anne Cunningham did the same in the 800-meter run in 2:25.34.
