No. 11 W&L hangs on for 2-1 win over No. 17 Roanoke in ODAC Semifinals

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The 11th-ranked and second-seeded Washington and Lee men's soccer team moved past 17th-ranked and third-seeded Roanoke, 2-1, in the ODAC Semifinals on Friday night.

The Generals (14-2-3) advance to their fifth straight ODAC championship game with the win, while the Maroons fall to 14-2-3 overall with the loss.

In the 34th minute first-year midfielder Samuel Bass (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) sent a corner kick into the box. After the attempt was headed out by a Roanoke defender, first-year defender Tyler Smith (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens & St. Agnes School) sent the ball back in and sophomore defender Jack Rawlins (Springfield, Va./Lake Braddock Secondary) redirected the ball past the keeper and into the net for the game's first score.

The W&L lead doubled to two goals in the 52nd minute when junior midfielder Harris Salom (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) slipped past a defender and touched a pass through a pair of defenders to junior forward Nick St. Pierre (Roanoke, Va./Northside) cutting towards the goal. St. Pierre needed one touch with his left foot to beat the keeper to his left to finish the opportunity.

The Maroons cut their deficit back to one goal in the 78th minute when sophomore forward Liam Camilleri headed in a cross from sophomore defender Tiernan Armstrong, but the Generals were able to stave Roanoke off over the final 12 minutes to hang on for the win.

Rawlins and St. Pierre both scored on their only shot attempts of the game, while Salom and senior defender Oliver Dolberg (Clovis, Calif./Floyd B. Buchanan) led the Generals with two shots each. Sophomore goalkeeper Michael Nyc (Kildeer, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) (14-2-3) made three saves in 90 minutes of action to earn the win.

For the Maroons, Camilleri led the way with three shots and his late goal. Three other Roanoke players also shot once for the offense. Sophomore goalkeeper Zach Behe (14-2-3) made two saves in 90 minutes of work in taking the loss.

The Generals held an 11-6 advantage in shots for the game, while both teams earned three corner kicks.

W&L will play for its second straight ODAC title on Saturday when it takes on fourth-seeded Lynchburg for the third time this season. Kick-off for the championship game is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
