Hampden-Sydney Advances To ODAC Semifinals On Penalty Kicks, 3-2, Over Ferrum

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – After a scoreless regulation and two overtime periods, the Hampden-Sydney College soccer team advanced to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) semifinals with a 3-2 advantage in penalty kicks over Ferrum on Tuesday night. The tie extends the Tigers' unbeaten streak to an ODAC record 23 games.

The first half saw both teams take five shots, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. Senior Gray Sutter/Clinton, NC made three saves in the period with Ferrum keeper William Winters making two. Known to force corner kicks, the Tigers took four in the opening half to just two for the Panthers. Sutter made two diving saves in quick succession midway through the period to keep Ferrum off the board.

The second half was a defensive effort for both teams as H-SC took six shots to four for the Panthers. However, neither squad was able to get the ball past the goalie to take a lead.

For the second straight game, the Tigers headed to overtime. After the five minute intermission, both teams came back onto the pitch to begin a 10 minute overtime, golden-goal period. Ferrum was able to fire three shots in the period while preventing the Tigers from taking any. With the score still knotted at 0-0, both squads headed to a second 10 minute overtime period.

Neither team was able to find the space to take a shot, so the teams headed to penalty kick shootout.

Sophomore Kade Wheeler/Blacksburg scored on the first shot in PK's, giving the Tigers the 1-0 advantage. Sutter made a diving save on Ferrum's first attempt by Jeffrey Calix to preserve the advantage. Sophomore Boyce Purdie/Clinton, NC took the second shot for Hampden-Sydney, but Winters was able to make a save. The Panthers scored on their second PK attempt by Leo Galpin to tie up the score at 1-1 PK's. Freshman Ben Beason/Cary, NC, who was making just his third appearance of the season, fired a goal passed Winters to give the Tigers the advantage once again at 2-1. Ferrum responded right away with Clayton Sanchez scoring a PK attempt bringing the score to 2-2.

Freshman Stefan Ngoh/Goldvein missed high on his shot for the Tigers, but Ferrum's Martin Zuluga missed wide right on his responded attempt. Hampden-Sydney turned to senior Luke Carter/Salem in its final attempt with Carter finding the back of the net, forcing the Panthers to answer.

After what appeared to be a miss by Daniel Aguirre way above the goal, the official never blew his whistle to start the attempt, allowing Ferrum another attempt. However, the outcome was the same with Aguirre firing his shot nearly five feet above the goal and securing the Tigers' advancement in the ODAC Tournament, 3-2 in PK's.

H-SC (8-0-1) advances to host No. 4 Lynchburg, who won 3-2 over No. 5 Randolph, on Friday, April 9 at a time yet to be determined.
