ODAC Softball Tournament Field Set

Top-Ranked Virginia Wesleyan Earns #1 Billing

FOREST, Va. --- The upcoming ODAC Softball Tournament has a bit of a new feel with a shakeup in the field compared to last year's team list. That is, if you look past the top seed. Two-time defending NCAA Division III champion Virginia Wesleyan stands atop the eight-team field in the No. 1 position. The Marlins, who have been the nation's top-ranked team for much of the season, occupy the tournament's top perch for a eighth consecutive year.

Locking in the second seed came down to the final series of the season as the Emory & Henry College and the University of Lynchburg locked horns in Emory. The two foes split, leaving the Wasps one-game up on the Hornets in the league table and determining the second and third seeds. Randolph-Macon College rounds out the top four teams in the bracket, with each serving as the home team in opening round games.

The next two positions took conference tiebreakers to solve. Bridgewater College and Guilford College finished 10-10 in league play and split with each other during their regular season series. Step two of the conference's tiebreaking procedures -- which assigns a point value for each win in ODAC play -- saw BC come out ahead in the final calculation. The Eagles, who return to the tournament for the first time since 2014, earn the #5 seed and open with R-MC. The sixth-seeded Quakers square off with Lynchburg in their first outing.

Ferrum College played its way to a tournament bid in its first season in the ODAC. The Panthers sit seventh and will meet E&H in their first contest. The eighth seed also took tiebreakers to determine, but unlike the stalemate between BC and GC, the lock between Shenandoah University and Roanoke College was accomplished via head-to-head comparison. The Hornets swept the Maroons in their regular season series, affording SU the final seed and a showdown with VWU in game one of the tournament.

Shenandoah is making its second tournament appearance in program history. Its first was in 2013, the Hornets inaugural season in the ODAC. SU made a run to the championship as the sixth-seed in that tournament. The final game was won by Virginia Wesleyan, 8-6, on a two-run homer in the top of the 19th inning, marking the longest game in ODAC history.

The ODAC's double-elimination tournament begins on Friday, April 26 and continues through Sunday, April 28. All games will be played at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex in Salem.
