Randolph-Macon Hoists Fourth ODAC Volleyball Championship Trophy

ASHLAND, Va. --- Senior Courtney Lowers (Suffolk, Va. / Nansemond River) recorded a double-double with 27 kills and 17 digs as the top-seeded Randolph-Macon women's volleyball team claimed the 2015 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship Saturday evening with a 3-1 victory against No.2 Virginia Wesleyan.

The Yellow Jackets (25-7) won the first 25-11 and edged the Marlins (25-10), 25-20 in the second set. VWC took the third set 25-17 before the Yellow Jackets claimed R-MC's fourth ODAC volleyball title with a 25-20 victory in the fourth set.

R-MC opened the first set on a 10-4 spurt before expanding their lead to 15-5. The Marlins tried to cut the deficit with a 3-0 spurt but the Yellow Jackets used a 10-3 run to win the first set. Senior Riley Martin (Crozet, Va. / Western Albemarle) served six straight points during the run.

The Yellow Jackets began the second set very similar to the first set with an 11-4 advantage. R-MC held a 16-10 lead before the Marlins came within two-points at 16-14. The teams traded pairs of 3-0 and 2-0 spurts but it was not enough for the Marlins as R-MC would win 25-20.

The score was tied at 9-9 in the third set. The Marlins gained the advantage with a 6-0 spurt. R-MC pulled to within three points at 18-15 but VWC used a 7-2 run to force a fourth set.

R-MC held a 9-3 advantage in the fourth set. The Marlins came within 13-11, but the Yellow Jackets pulled away to maintain a 19-14 lead. VWC added pressure and used a 5-1 spurt to cut its deficit to one-point at 20-19. The Yellow Jackets responded with a 5-1 run to claim the fourth set and the championship title. Lowers tallied the final kill of the match.

Senior Katie Rossberg (Crozet, Va. / Western Albemarle) added 16 kills and 16 digs for R-MC. Sophomore Erin Quinn (Morrisville, N.C. / Cardinal Gibbons) recorded 30 assists and Martin registered 18 assists. Sophomore Samantha Sallade (Newport News, Va. / Peninsula Catholic) paced R-MC with 16 digs. R-MC tallied 13 blocks. Senior Addie Cooper (Virginia Beach, Va. / Cape Henry Collegiate) led the Yellow Jackets with three blocks.

Tiffany Barrett led Virginia Wesleyan with 17 kills and 15 digs.  Emilee Pierson (17) and Kirstin Sessoms (14) combined for 31 assists, while Rosalind Ludovici and Doneisha Hall added six kills each. Dare Wright and Sessoms had three block assists apiece.  Marin Crowder chipped in 12 digs. 

Lowers, Quinn and Sallade were named to the ODAC All-Tournament Team. Joining the Yellow Jackets were Pierson and Crowder of Virginia Wesleyan, Mackenzie Shand of Washington and Lee and Alexandra Martin of Roanoke.  

The Yellow Jackets receive an automatic bid to the 2015 NCAA Volleyball Tournament. The pairings will be announced on Monday, Nov. 9 at 11:00 a.m. NCAA Tournament play begins next weekend.
