ODAC Athletes of the Week | Baseball, Basketball, Soccer, Swimming

FOREST, Va. --- Despite the weather still throwing wrinkles into ODAC schedules, new sports joined the weekly reports with more teams active over this period. With more sports playing, weekly awards reports will now feature on multiple days. Today, men's and women's basketball and men's and women's swimming are joined by baseball an softball. Those earning ODAC Athlete of the Week awards include (pictured from top and left): Hanna Hull from Virginia Wesleyan softball, William Brueggeman from Washington and Lee men's basketball, Kevin Ledford from Roanoke baseball, Jessica Goldyn from VWU softball, Matt Yarbrough from Ferrum baseball, Erin Hughes from W&L women's basketball, Cullen Beach from Bridgewater men's swimming, and Chloe Dewberry from VWU women's swimming.

Below are entries for all eight winners from today's multi-sport release. For Tuesday, men's and women's track & field will be featured along with men's and women's soccer for the first time this season. Barring any weather delays, men's and women's golf will feature on Wednesday.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Erin Hughes | Washington and Lee | Sr. | Guard
Hughes, a senior from Raleigh, N.C., helped Washington and Lee moved to 3-1 on the season in a 76-62 victory over Emory & Henry for the Generals second straight win. Hughes set a new career-high with 29 points on 12-of-21 shooting from the field including 1-of-2 from deep. She was also 4-for-4 from the foul line. She chipped in seven boards, including three via the offensive glass, and posted four steals, two assists, and two blocked shots. For the season, Hughes is second in the ODAC in scoring at 19.3 points per game. She is fifth in field goal shooting (.532) and ninth in foul shooting (.800). She averages 6.0 rebounds per game.

MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
William Brueggeman | Washington and Lee | Sr. | Guard
Brueggeman, a senior from Houston, Texas, stuffed the stat sheet in a pair of Washington and Lee wins last week to help the Generals improve to 3-1 and extend their winning streak to three straight games. Brueggeman opened with 28 points on 10-of-19 shooting including 5-of-8 from deep and 3-of-4 from the foul line in a 98-85 win over Emory & Henry. As part of that scoring effort, he became the 28th player in W&L men's basketball history to eclipse 1,000 career points. He added eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals against the Wasps. In a 93-87 victory at Shenandoah, Brueggeman set a new career-high with 32 points. He established in a new Generals' record for three-pointers made in a game in going 8-of-13 from beyond the arc. He finished 9-of-15 from the field overall and went 6-of-6 from the charity stripe. He chipped in eight boards, two assists, and a steal. For the season, Brueggeman is sixth in the ODAC in scoring at 17.5 points per game. His 81.1-percent showing at the foul line ranks seventh in the league. He also averages 7.8 rebounds per game, good for 11th in the ODAC.

WOMEN'S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Chloe Dewberry | Virginia Wesleyan | So. | Backstroke
Dewberry, a sophomore from Chesapeake, Va., had a big day in helping Virginia Wesleyan defeat Sweet Briar, 117-108. Dewberry won a pair of individual events and helped the Marlins to a first and second place finish in two relays. She the 100-yard backstroke in 1:07.53, which ranks as the 11th fastest time in the ODAC in the event. She improved upon her ODAC ranking in the 200-yard backstroke, winning that discipline in 2:27.39 to slot eighth in the league. Dewberry and her teammates won the 400-yard medley relay in 4:50.02 and finished second in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 4:19.24.

MEN'S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Cullen Beach | Bridgewater | Fy. | Backstroke
Beach, a first-year from Chesterfield, Va., put together a record-setting day in helping Bridgewater to a 118-110 victory over William Peace last week. Beach set school records in the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke events as we as the 200-meter medley relay. He and his teammates were victorious in each event, as they were in the 200-meter freestyle relay to clinch the team win. They swam 1:44.17 in the that relay as well as a school-record 1:55.78 in the 200-medley. Beach won and set a BC standard in the 100-meter back in 1:03.02, which when converted to short-course yards for ODAC and NCAA rankings, places him seventh in the ODAC at 57.10-seconds. He again stopped the watches first and set a school mark in the 200-meter back in 2:20.33. His converted time of 2:07.14 ranks sixth in the league.

SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Hanna Hull | Virginia Wesleyan | Gr. | LHP
Hull, a graduate student from Chesterfield, Va., kicked off the 2021 season with a seven inning no-hitter in a 9-0 victory at William Peace. The ODAC's leader in nearly all career and single-season pitching categories, Hull made up for an uncharacteristic seven walks with 16 strikeouts. She struck out the side in the first, third, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, fanning the last six batters she faced. This the 54th time Hull has struck out 10 or more batters in a game and 10th time she punched out 16 or more. Her career-best -- and ODAC and VWU records -- is 19 strikeouts in 2017. For her career, Hull is now 110-9 with 1,169 strikeouts and a 0.68 ERA in 732.2 innings of work.

BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Kevin Ledford | Roanoke | Sr. | Relief Pitcher
Ledford, a senior from Stafford, Va., returned to his customary late-bullpen role for the Maroons to start 2021 and picked up an extra-innings victory via a 6-5 result at William Peace. Ledford worked two scoreless innings to finish the game. He surrendered two hits and struck out four batters without a walk. For his career, Ledford is 5-4 with eight saves, 84 strikeouts, and a 1.82 ERA in 74.0 innings of work, all in relief.

SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jessica Goldyn | Virginia Wesleyan | Sr. | Catcher
Goldyn, a senior from Virginia Beach, Va., started off her season by reaching base seven times in eight plate appearances in Virginia Wesleyan's sweep of William Peace on the road. Goldyn went 4-for-5 in game one, smacking a pair of doubles and a triple on the way to four RBI and two runs scored. She also accounted for two of the Marlins' 10 stolen bases in the 9-0 triumph. Behind the plate for game two, Goldyn went 2-for-2 with another double and two runs scored. She also walked in VWU's 10-0 victory, helping her finish with an .857/.875/1.571 slash line for the two games. Goldyn is now a .391 lifetime hitter with 17 doubles, eight triples, and 54 stolen bases.

BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Matt Yarbrough | Ferrum | Sr. | 1st Base
Yarbrough, a senior from Danville, Va., ripped the cover off the ball in his first outing of the season, helping Ferrum open with a 6-5 victory at N.C. Wesleyan. Yarbrough had a hand in five of those runs as he went 2-for-5 with a two-run triple and two-run homer on the way to a five-RBI day. The triple was the first of his career and the homer marked his second jog around the bases.
