ODAC Athletes of the Week | Field Hockey, Soccer, Track & Field, Volleyball

FOREST, Va. --- All sports that will compete this spring are officially underway as women's volleyball joins this report on Tuesday of week nine. Those earning ODAC Athlete of the Week awards include (pictured from top and left): Grace Amaden from Washington and Lee field hockey, Aniya Seward from Lynchburg women's track & field, Joe O'Connor from W&L men's track & field, Kacee Hooker from Bridgewater women's track & field, Penny Senior from Randolph-Macon men's soccer, Kate Poppo from Shenandoah volleyball, Max Sparks from LYN men's track & field, and Destiny Zapata from BC women's soccer.

Below are entries for all eight winners from today's release. Stay tuned for ODAC weekly golf awards on Wednesday.

FIELD HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Grace Amaden | Washington and Lee | Sr. | Forward
Amaden, a senior from East Hampton, N.Y., helped Washington and Lee improved to 2-0 on the season with her first collegiate hat trick on Friday. She found the back of the cage in the 15th, 43rd, and 49th minutes in the Generals 9-0 home win over Virginia Wesleyan. Amaden has now scored four goals on the season.

WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Destiny Zapata | Bridgewater | Fy. | Forward
Zapata, a first-year from Smyrna, Del., helped Bridgewater improved to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in ODAC play with a pair of conference wins last week. After contributing to the Eagles attack from the left wing in their 2-0 home win over Shenandoah, Zapata showed off her speed in registering a pair of goals in BC's 2-1 road win at Roanoke College over the weekend. She slotted home the game's first goal via an unassisted effort in the 66th minute and then met the end of a Cyan Coates thru ball with her left foot and tucked the cross-goal strike inside the right-side netting for a 2-0 lead in the 85th minute. Roanoke would score less than two minutes later, making Zapata's second goal all that more important towards the final result. For the season, Zapata has scored four goals for eight points.

MEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Penny Senior | Randolph-Macon | Jr. | Forward
Senior, a junior from Kingston, Jamaica, provided some late-game heroics for Randolph-Macon in the Yellow Jackets 2-1 home win over Ferrum. The Panthers led for much of the contest before Senior helped knot the game at 1-all in the 84th minute by assisting Chazz Jones on his equaliser. With 97-seconds to play, Senior picked the right time to score his first goal of the season off a feed from Colton Howell to improve Randolph-Macon to 3-1 overall and in ODAC play. Senior has registered five points on one goal and three assists this year.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Aniya Seward | Lynchburg | Fy. | Jumps/Sprints
Seward, a first-year from Ebony, Va., earned first, second, and third place finishes at the Lynchburg Hornet Open hosted by the University of Lynchburg. Seward won the triple jump at 11.70 meters (38-4.75), setting a new program record in the process. The Lynchburg triple jump record was the longest standing mark in its women's ranks, previously set by Amy Edwards in 1996. Seward's leap ranks first in the ODAC and NCAA Division III this season. Seward also competed in the 100-meter hurdles, placing second at 15.01-seconds. That time is second in the ODAC and the country. She joined teammates Bailey Casto, Maya Lacy, and Vuronika Barnes in the 4x100-meter relay. They finished third in 50.33-seconds. That time is second in the ODAC and fifth in D3.

MEN'S OUTDOOR FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Joe O'Connor | Washington and Lee | Jumps/Hurdles
O'Connor, a junior from Henrico, Va., kicked off his season with one event victory and two second place finishes at the Lynchburg Hornet Open hosted by the University of Lynchburg. O'Connor won the pole vault by clearing 4.57 meters (15-0.00), which ranks first in the ODAC and tops the early NCAA Division III rankings. He finished second in the high jump at 1.78 meters (5-10.00), tying for first in the ODAC and 17th nationally. O'Connor also took a turn in the 110-meter hurdles, placing second in 15.28-seconds. That is the top time in the ODAC and ranks second in Division III.

WOMEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Kacee Hooker | Bridgewater | Jr. | Sprints
Hooker, a junior from Chesterfield, Va., posted a pair of individual national top-five times and one additional top-five mark in a relay at the Lynchburg Hornet Open hosted by the University of Lynchburg. Hooker won the 200-meter dash in 25.34-seconds, which tops the ODAC and NCAA Division III charts so far this season. She added a second place showing in the 400-meter dash in 59.64-seconds. That mark is #1 in the ODAC and fifth in the country. Hooker joined Adalia Coleman, Kylah Gray, and Haleigh Hamlin on the Eagles' second place 4x100-meter relay team. Their time of 49.62-seconds leads the conference and is second in Division III.

MEN'S OUTDOOR TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Max Sparks | Lynchburg | Jr. | Distance
Sparks, a junior from Canton, Conn., entered his first outdoor race of the 2021 spring campaign in mid-season form a the Lynchburg Hornet Open hosted by the University of Lynchburg. Sparks won the 5,000-meter run in 14:38.80, his best collegiate time in the event and the third-fastest in Lynchburg history. That time currently tops the ODAC chart as well as the NCAA Division III qualification rankings.

VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kate Poppo | Shenandoah | So | Outside Hitter
Poppo, a sophomore from Cross Junction, Va., helped Shenandoah start the first spring volleyball season in ODAC history with a pair of wins over Randolph College, 3-2, and Mt. Aloysius, 3-0. Poppo registered 36 total kills at 4.50 per set while hitting .300 (36-12-80). She added 25 digs, nine aces, and accounted for 45.0 points at 5.6 per set. Against Randolph, Poppo smashed her previous single-match high for kills (13) with 21 winners while hitting .372 from her outside position. She added 17 digs and collected six aces to lead to 27.0 points earned at 5.4 per set. If not for her showing against the WildCats, Poppo's 15 kills against Mt. Aloysius would have marked a new personal-best attacking match. She added eight digs and three aces on the way to 18.0 points and 6.0 per set.
