ODAC Athletes of the Week | Cross Country, Field Hockey, Soccer, Volleyball

FOREST, Va. --- The first multi-sport report of the 2021-22 season shows us that ODAC student-athletes are ready for a big campaign! Weekly awards will be announced on multiple days each week throughout the academic year. See the full schedule below. Those earning ODAC Athlete of the Week awards in this edition include (pictured from top and left): Elizabeth Longacre from Eastern Mennonite field hockey, Peter Smith from Roanoke men's cross country, Emily Smeds from Bridgewater women's cross country, Brennan Lagana from Lynchburg men's soccer, Chandler Gallant from Shenandoah women's soccer, and Sydney Heifner from Washington and Lee volleyball.

Below are entries for all six winners from today's multi-sport release. Most weeks this fall, the following schedule will be used for awards reporting:

  • Sundays: football
  • Mondays: field hockey, soccer, volleyball (basketball and swimming when they begin)
  • Tuesdays: cross country (indoor track when it begins)
  • Wednesdays: golf

FIELD HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Elizabeth Longacre | Eastern Mennonite | So. | Forward
Longacre, a sophomore from Quakertown, Pa., exploded with 11 points to help Eastern Mennonite to a pair of non-conference wins to open the season. Longacre needed just seven shots to register five goals for a .714 shooting percentage in an 8-0 shutout over Lancaster Bible in game one. She then factored in the lone goal in game two as she assisted Ashley Maldonado on her goal with 57-seconds to play for a 1-0 victory over Transylvania. Longacre leads the ODAC in points and goals scored thru the first weekend of the season.

MEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brennan Lagana | Lynchburg | So. | Forward
Lagana, a sophomore from Burlington, N.C., helped Lynchburg rattle off a pair of non-conference wins from strong regional opponents. Lagana opened the 2021 slate with his second career multi-goal game -- his previous was in the spring 2021 ODAC championship -- helping the Hornets to a 4-1 win over Covenant. He was again on the scoresheet in a 4-1 victory over Greensboro as he found the back of the net and registered his first collegiate assist against the Pride.

WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Chandler Gallant | Shenandoah | Fy. | Midfielder
Gallant, a first-year from Fairfax Station, Va., had about as good an introduction to collegiate women's soccer as possible with a pair of game-deciding goals to start off her career. Gallant finished off a stellar individual effort in the 16th minute against N.C. Wesleyan to highlight her first collegiate game with the contest's lone goal for a 1-0 victory. Following a 2-1 overtime setback to Salisbury University, Gallant helped the Hornets recover with a 1-0 victory over St. Mary's (Md.). She again posted the game's lone goal, this time sending a penalty past the keeper in the 46th minute.

VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sydney Heifner | Washington and Lee | So. | Outside Hitter
Heifner, a sophomore from Nashville, Tenn., helped Washington and Lee to victories in three of the squad's four wins last week as the Generals opened the fall season with a 4-1 mark against non-conference foes. Heifner hit .249 and average 5.0 points won per set as she racked up 62 total kills (4.43 per set) and 43 total digs (3.07 per set) to go along with six blocks and five aces towards 70.5 points earned. She opened with a career-best 20 kills on a .255 attack percentage with 14 digs and an ace in a 3-1 win over William Peace. She recorded 12 kills and nine digs with two blocks and two aces in a 3-0 win over N.C. Wesleyan and 13 kills and eight digs in a 3-0 setback to USA South #1 and future ODAC member Averett. Heifner capped her week with 17 kills, 12 digs, and three blocks in a 3-1 victory over William Peace.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER OF THE WEEK
Peter Smith | Roanoke | Sr.
Smith, a senior from Roanoke, Va., joined the winners' circle for the first time in his collegiate career by out-pacing the field at the Eagle XC Challenge hosted by Bridgewater College. Smith used a 5:11.5 per-mile pace to finish with a time of 12:54.2 over the four kilometer layout. He won the event by 17.6 seconds and was the lone competitor to crack 13 minutes in the field.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER OF THE WEEK
Emily Smeds | Bridgewater | Fy.
Smeds, a first-year from Palmyra, Va., made the most of her first collegiate appearance as she was the first runner to stop the watches at the Eagle XC Challenge hosted by Bridgewater College. Smeds posted a time of 15:21.0 over the four-kilometer course, using a 6:10.5 per-mile pace over the layout that will eventually accommodate the ODAC Cross Country Championships on October 30.
