ODAC Athletes of the Week | Baseball, Lacrosse, Softball, Tennis

FOREST, Va. --- If early season play is any indication, ODAC fans are going to have a lot to cheer about during the spring season. Week 27 featured big time wins in tennis and high-output performances in baseball, lacrosse, and softball.

Those earning ODAC Athlete of the Week awards for Monday, March 6, include (pictured top-bottom, left-right): Ruth de Souza from Sweet Briar tennis, Evan Erb from Washington and Lee men's tennis, Julia Thomson from W&L women's lacrosse, Mark Sprague from Virginia Wesleyan men's lacrosse, Kayla Davis from Randolph-Macon softball, Colby Martin from Shenandoah baseball, Ashley MacFarlane from SU women's lacrosse, Tyler Carney from Bridgewater men's lacrosse, Rilee Baughan from R-MC softball, and Will Turner from Roanoke baseball.

Below are entries for each of the winners from today's release. The schedule below will be used for reporting ODAC Athletes of the Week:

BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Will Turner | Roanoke | Sr. | Starter
Turner, a senior from Moneta, Va., made the most of his first appearance of the year as he went the distance in leading Roanoke to a 8-1 victory over Franklin & Marshall College. Turner toss all nine frames for a traditional complete game. He allowed one run and scattered six hits. He did not walk a batter and fanned five. Turner surrendered his lone run and three hits in the first inning, but enjoyed several stretches of consistent success including 10 straight outs from the fifth through eighth innings. He rolled up two double-play balls and induced 10 ground ball outs in controlling the Diplomats offense.

BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Coby Martin | Shenandoah | Jr. | 2nd Base
Martin, a junior from Lititz, Pa., is enjoying a strong return from injury as he helped Shenandoah to a 3-1 week that included a pair of victories over nationally 22nd-ranked Oswego State. Martin went 8-for-13 over the four contests and posted a .615/.706/1.000 slash line. He doubled twice and smacked a homer, which happened to be a game-winning blast in a 7-5 victory over Mount Aloysius in the #11 Hornets first game of the week. Martin had four hits in that outing and three more including a double with two RBI and a stolen base in a 4-1 victory over Oswego. He walked twice, drove in a run, and stole a base in SU's first loss of the season, an 11-2 final against SUNY Cortland. Martin singled, drove in two more runs, and stole two bases to help Shenandoah move to 10-1 with a 5-3 win over Oswego. For the season, Martin is slashing .353/.488/.529 with 18 RBI and nine stolen bases, the latter total leading the ODAC.

MEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Tyler Carney | Bridgewater | Jr. | Goalkeeper
Carney, a junior from Delaware, Ohio, helped the Eagles improve to 2-0 on the young season with a 12-10 comeback victory at Piedmont University. Carney faced 49 total shots with 25 on-cage during his 60-minute shift. He made 15 saves at a 60.0 save percentage. His effort included 10 stops in the second half that allowed Bridgewater to recovered from 4-2 down at the half to level the game at 6-6 after three quarters. Carney made six saves in fourth quarter alone, leading to BC's 12-10 triumph. He added three ground balls and helped himself with an assist on Dan Flynn's goal late in the third frame. For the season, Carney owns a 57.4 save percentage and a 9.54 goals against average. He has made 24 saves.

MEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Mark Sprague | Virginia Wesleyan | Sr. | Attack
Sprague, a senior from Marshall, Va., was prolific in two wins for Virginia Wesleyan last week, improving the Marlins record to 3-1 with their first ODAC game on tap this week. Sprague registered 20 points for the week on 10 goals and 10 assists. He opened with seven points in a 20-4 win over Husson. He scored five times and dished out a pair of assists to go with a caused turnover. Sprague is now #2 in VWU history in single-game assists after dishing out eight helpers in a 22-17 triumph over Wabash College. The eight assists are second only to the 11 assists handed out by Scott Holava in 1991. Sprague scored five goals to finish the contest with 13 points. He added three ground balls to his line. For the season, Sprague leads the ODAC in assists (13) and is tied for first in points (28). He is tied for second in goals scored (15).

MEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Evan Erb | Washington and Lee | #1 Singles | #1 Doubles
Erb, a sophomore from St. Louis, Mo., went up against stiff competition in two matches against nationally ranked competition and posted a pair of ranked singles wins. In the first match of the week against nationally eighth-ranked N.C. Wesleyan, Erb, rated 13th in the region by the ITA, captured the Generals point with a win at #1 singles over Tshepo Mosarwa, the 16th-ranked player in the Atlantic South Region by the ITA. Erb won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to help avenge a loss with partner Evan Brady to Mosarwa and Albert Sitwell at #1 doubles, 5-8. Erb came up with his second big win in W&L's 7-2 setback to nationally 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins University. Erb defeated Thomas Yu, the top-ranked player in the region and sixth-best player in the country. Erb won 6-2, 4-6, 10-7. In doubles play, Erb and Brady, ranked 11th nationally and fourth in the region, squared off with Yu and his brother, James, the region's top-ranked and nation's #3 doubles duo. The pair from JHU won a tight contest, 8-7 (7-2).

SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Rilee Baughan | Randolph-Macon | Sr. | Pitcher
Baughan, a senior from Warsaw, Va., earned two wins in her first two starts of the season to help Randolph-Macon to a 3-1 showing at the Grand Slam Triangle Classic hosted by William Peace University in Raleigh, N.C. Baughan went the distance in her first appearance, giving up one run on four hits. She worked around five walks and punched out a pair of batters to earn a 4-1 victory over Pfeiffer University. Baughan started the first game of day two and worked six innings to earn a 9-1 victory over Marymount University (Va.). She surrendered one unearned run on two hits. She cut down the walks to a pair and fanned six batters.

SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kayla Davis | Randolph-Macon | So. | Catcher
Davis, a sophomore from Powhatan, Va., helped Randolph-Macon start its season with a 3-1 showing at the Grand Slam Triangle Classic hosted William Peace University in Raleigh, N.C. Davis went 7-for-12 and slashed .583/.615/1.083 over the four contests as she hit safely and drove in at least one run in each outing. She opened scoring in a 4-1 win over Pfeiffer with a first inning RBI single. She doubled in a run in the first inning to start the Yellow Jackets offense in a 3-2 win over DePauw in the second game of day one. On day two, Davis went 3-for-3 with a RBI double and solo blast in a 9-1 win over Marymount (Va.). She capped her tournament with another RBI double in an 8-4 setback to N.C. Wesleyan.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Ashley MacFarlane | Shenandoah | Sr. | Goalkeeper
MacFarlane, a senior from Conwingo, Md., helped Shenandoah improve to 3-1 on the season with a 13-9 victory at Christopher Newport University, which was receiving votes towards the IWLCA's top-25. MacFarlane saw 28 total shots fired at her goal with 22 on-cage during her full 60-minute shift. She turned away 13 of those attempts for a 59.1 save percentage, including six saves in a decisive second quarter that saw the Hornets carry a 5-3 lead to the break. MacFarlane, who added three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers to her line, held the Captains to 3-for-6 on free position shots with saves on all three misses. For the season, MacFarlane is second in the ODAC in goals against (18) and save percentage (59.1%) and third in goals against average (6.71).

WOMEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Julia Thomson | Washington and Lee | Jr. | Midfielder
Thomson, a junior from Larchmont, N.Y., picks up her first weekly award of the season after helping nationally fourth-ranked Washington and Lee to a pair of victories last week including their third win over a top-10 ranked opponent of the season. The Generals now stand 5-0 overall to start head coach Maddie Coleman's career. Thomson scored once in the Generals 22-0 shutout of Ferrum on the road in their ODAC opener. She then not only registered four points at Gettysburg College, but came up in the clutch three times as Washington and Lee took down the perennial power and nationally seventh-ranked Bullets, 10-9, in overtime. Thomson opened the Generals scoring with 7:11 on the first quarter clock to make it 2-1 Gettysburg. Later, with W&L trailing 9-6 in the fourth quarter, she scored the last two of a three-goal run over the final 1:57 to game time to force overtime. Thomson's two goals came with 0:30 and 0:16 on the clock, respectively. She added her final clutch moment with 2:56 showing on the board in extra time as she supplied the feed to Jenny Lisovicz for the game-deciding goal. For the season, Thomson has registered eight points on six goals and two assists.

WOMEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Ruth de Souza | Sweet Briar | Sr. | #1 Singles | #1 Doubles
De Souza, a senior from Marilia, Brazil, earns her first weekly award of the season after helping Sweet Briar open ODAC play with a 7-2 win over Shenandoah University in one of two matches played by the Vixens last Wednesday. They also defeated Lynchburg, 9-0. De Souza played in top flight doubles and singles against at SU. She and Allison Wandling, an All-ODAC First Team duo last season combined for an 8-1 win over Jahveesha Coombs and Lily Kimble in doubles play. De Souza, who was an All-ODAC Second Team choice at #1 singles, then posted a 6-0, 7-5 win over Coombs in singles play. Coombs was a first team pick at #2 singles last year.
