WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University won the battle of the women's basketball Hornets, defeating Lynchburg College 57-36 in non-conference action Tuesday evening.

Shenandoah (1-0) won its season opener for the fifth straight time under coach Michelle Guyant-Holloway with the win over Lynchburg (0-1).

SU completely dominated the opening 20 minutes, jumping out to a 30-10 halftime lead as LC shot just 15.4 percent (4 for 26) and committed 17 turnovers.

The Shenandoah Hornets scored 13 points off of those 17 miscues and added 11 more points in the second half off of Lynchburg Hornets turnovers.

LC turned the ball over 31 times in the contest.

Shenandoah first took a double-digit lead when Haley Smith converted a layup at the 12:13 mark of the first, and never let its lead shrink below 13 points the rest of the way.

Smith's layup was part of a 13-0 run in a span of 4:34 that turned a 7-5 contest into a 20-5 advantage.

SU finished the first half by scoring 23 of the final 28 points of the half.

The second half was largely a matter of playing out the final 20 minutes - Lynchburg got no closer than 16 points and Shenandoah held at least a 20-point lead for the final 6:10.

The hosts' largest advantage was 27, when Smith finished a run of eight straight points with a pair of free throws at the 1:10 mark.

Smith, in her first game in an SU uniform after transferring from DII Concord, led all players with 17 points.

Sierra Edwards backed her up with 14 points and nine boards.

Katie Crump paced LC with 13.

Lynchburg won the battle of the glass 46-37.
