Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Tops Bridgewater, 57-51, To Open The Season Saturday

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (1-0) got its season underway with a 57-51 win at former ODAC-rival Bridgewater College (0-3) Saturday evening.

How It Happened
- After falling behind, 4-0, early in the game, the Wasps ran off nine straight to take the lead. The two squads traded baskets with four in a row by the Eagles making it a 12-9 contest at the end of the first.
- In the second frame, the teams continued to go back and forth before a 10-0 run by Bridgewater made the score 24-19. Six of the final 10 points of the half went E&H's way as BC took a 28-25 advantage into the break.
- The third period saw Emory & Henry regain the lead, 34-30, thanks to a 9-2 run which covered the opening three minutes. The Eagles closed the gap to 39-38 a with 10 minutes left to play.
- E&H opened the fourth quarter on a 9-2 run, going up 48-40 with 6:16 to play. Bridgewater was able to get within three (54-51) with 1:39 to go but the Wasps made three-of-four free throws down the stretch to seal the 57-51 victory.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Senior center Alexis Hoppers (Sparta, N.C.) had a game-high 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds while junior guard Brylee Jones (Greeneville, Tenn.) added 11 points and two boards.
- Sophomore guard Taylor Owens (Bristol, Tenn.) notched eight points, five rebounds and two steals off the bench while sophomore guard Amaya Lee (Bristol, Va.) and freshman forward Emma Santoro (King, N.C.) each had six points with Santoro adding nine rebounds and two steals.

Bridgewater Individual Leaders
- Jaden Alsberry led the Eagles with 13 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks off the bench while Erika Nettles went for 13 points, seven rebounds and two steals.
- Julia Williams had seven points while Rosemary Pierson tacked on six points and two boards.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot just 33.9 percent (20-for-59) from the field with five three-pointers but made 12-of-14 (85.7%) of its free throws.
- Bridgewater hit 17-of-49 (34.7%) of its attempts with five triples but was just 12-for-24 (50%) at the stripe.
- E&H held a 41-38 rebounding advantage and led, 7-0, on second-chance points. The Wasps also led 18-13 on points off turnovers.
- The Eagles posted a 22-20 lead on points in the paint.
