UMW Volleyball Tops Randolph, Johns Hopkins in Lynchburg Tournament

The University of Mary Washington volleyball team won a pair of matches at the Lynchburg College Tournament on Friday evening. The Eagles topped Randolph, 25-17, 26-24, 25-15 before a stirring comeback from an 0-2 deficit to down Johns Hopkins, 23-25, 22-25, 25-18, 28-2, 15-13. UMW moves to 7-1 on the year.

In the win over Randolph, freshman Hannah Lawson (Charlottesville, Va., Albemarle) went 11-15 on kill attempts without an error, and also added seven digs, while sophomore Laura Gomez (Charlottesville, Va., Albemarle) added six kills. Sophomore Ellen Smethurst (Charlottesville, Va., Covenant School) added 4-7 on kill attempts, and junior Tola Adebanjo (Overland Park, Ks., Blue Valley Northwest) had six kills. Junior Katie Shiflett (Weyers Cave, Va., Fort Defiance) scored 12 assists and nine aces, and freshman Sammy Hogue (Springfield, Va., West Springfield) added nine assists.

In the come from behind win over Johns Hopkins, Gomez went 15-35 with one error, Lawson added 12 kills, and Adbanjo posted 10 kills. Smethurst had six kills and six blocks, Shiflett had 33 assists and 10 digs, and Karissa Herrick (Colts Neck, N.J., Colts Neck) scored seven blocks. Kaitlynn Wickersham (Midlothian, Va., Manchester) added 17 digs to lead the Eagles.

UMW will continue at the Lynchburg Tournament on Saturday morning.
