The Lead: Roanoke hosted Washington and Lee at the Cregger Center on Monday night with a share of first place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) standings on the line. The Generals used an 8-0 run to break open a tie game in the second quarter and took a 34-25 lead into the break. Roanoke would see their deficit grow to as many as 18 before a late rally made it a six-point game with 3:00 to play. The Generals hit their free throws and held on for the 72-58 win over the Maroons.

How it Happened:

  • Kristina Harrel scored to tie the game at 7-7 midway through the opening period. Washington and Lee would go on an 8-0 run over the next three-minutes of action.
  • Rose Sande hit a jump shot and Lauren Keel connected from long range to make it 15-12 after one quarter.
  • A Renee Alquiza hoop followed by a Sande free throw would tie the game at 15 apiece with 8:00 left before the half. Another 8-0 General run would see the visitors begin to pull away.
  • Roanoke responded with a Peyton Kirchner layup and two more Sande free throws to stop the W&L surge. However, the Generals closed the half on an 11-6 run to take the 34-25 advantage into the break.
  • Another Washington and Lee run to start the third frame would see the lead grow to 43-27 with just over 5:00 left in the third quarter. The Maroons could not close the gap and went into the final period trailing, 49-34.
  • A 3-pointer would see the W&L lead grow to 18 with 8:15 left to play. That's when Roanoke began to mount a rally. Kirchner and Alquiza hit back-to-back threes to cut it to 12 before a Keel triple cut the deficit into single digits, 58-49.
  • With 3:03 to play, Alquiza hit her second 3-pointer of the quarter and Roanoke had come back to within six, 60-54. The Maroons could not complete the comeback and the Generals hit 8-10 free throws to close out the game and claim the top spot in the ODAC standings, 72-58.
  • Alquiza had 10 while Sande posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds to go with five assists. Kirchner added seven of RC's 23 bench points.

Up next: Roanoke will host the reigning ODAC champions from Lynchburg on Wednesday night. The game with the Hornets will be the second part of a men's/women's back-to-back in the Cregger Center as a part of the "Maroon Madness" festivities.
