Guilford Advances to Quarterfinals

The Guilford College women's basketball team defeated Hollins University on Tuesday evening in the first round of the ODAC Tournament, 75-68. 

The first quarter started off with Hollins making three-consecutive three pointers and a layup, taking the lead, 11-0. The Quakers soon put up their first two points by Ashtyn Zeigler followed by a three-point play from Lindsay Gauldin. Hollins owned the whole first quarter ending with a 15-point lead (20-5).

Opening the second, Guilford fouled Hollins causing Hollins to score again with a good free throw putting the score 21-5. Towards the middle of the quarter, the Quakers started to close the gap after back-to-back free throw shots from Carleigh Perry and Gauldin. 

Although the Quakers were falling behind, they did not give up as Anayaih Randolph made a good three pointer assisted by Courtney McMillan to continue to close the gap. With just 13 seconds on the clock, Zeigler made a clean three to close the first half. Hollins led 31-25 at the break.

The third quarter is where things started to go uphill for the Quakers as J'la Hinson opened up with a three pointer within seconds. At 8:22, GC was able to make a comeback and tie the score, 33-33. Hollins then took the lead but it wasn't long for Guilford to gain the upper hand. 

Both teams exchanged scores causing the score to be tied twice, 46-46 and 49-49. With a minute left on the clock, the Quakers scored six-straight capped off by a McMillan layup to lead 55-49.

The fourth started with Guilford scoring a good layup by Gauldin at 8:08. Guilford started to take contol but Hollinstried to come back towards the end of the quarter. With just two seconds on the clock Perry made both free throws ending with a score of 75-68

Gauldin paced the Quakers with 25 points and one steal while also corralling 11 rebounds. Perry  ended the night with 14 points and four assists. Zeigler finished the night with 11 points.

The Quakers shot 67.7% (21-31) from the free throw line while Hollins shot 50% (14-28). The Quakers also out rebounded Hollins, 37-28.

Guilford will face top-seed Washington and Lee Friday, February 25 for the quarterfinals in the ODAC Tournament. The start time will be at 1:00 p.m.
