Monarchs Hold On For 58-57 Win Over Lynchburg

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Lynchburg led early, but the Monarchs took the lead in the second half and held on late for the 58-57 victory.

Lynchburg (1-3) led 23-11 midway through the first half, but Methodist (2-4) scored 10 unanswered points to move within one.  The Hornets responded with a layup, but sophomore Marc Slade hit two free throws to finish the half down 25-24.

The Monarchs came out strong in the second half with a layup from freshman Mark Jernigan to take the 26-25 lead.  Methodist extended their lead to seven before Lynchburg came back and tied the game at 41.  The Monarchs regained an eight point lead, but the Hornets came back once again to tie the game at 53 with 3:04 to go in the game.  A free throw from Slade with 2:03 remaining put the Monarchs up by two, but a layup from Lynchburg's Mason Woolridge tied the game at 57.  Sophomore Leland Jones was tied at the under end of the court and hit the second free throw to give Methodist the 58-57 lead with nine seconds remaining.  The Hornets crossed half court and called a timeout with 5.9 seconds to go.  The Methodist defense held strong for Jernigan to grab the steal as time expired.

Senior #A.B. Lehmann# led the Monarchs with 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting.  Jernigan and Jones each had 12 points. 

Mason Woolridge led the Hornets with 18 points.

Methodist will travel to Emory & Henry on Wednesday for a 7 pm tipoff.
