Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Quakers Edge Out Marlins

The Guilford College women's basketball team traveled to Virginia Wesleyan to battle the Marlins. The Quakers edged out the Marlins, 51-50.

Entering the fourth period, Guilford (5-10, 3-7) led 37-29. Virginia Wesleyan (3-15, 0-11) came out firing as it went on a 13-3 run including 3-3 from three-point range.

A free throw by Abby Kennedy followed by a layup from J'la Hinson gave the Quakers a 43-42 lead with 5:36 to go in regulation. Three free throws gave the Marlins the lead back but two three-point shots from Caroline Wilkerson transferred the lead back to GC (49-46).

The hosts made a layup along with a free throw to even the game at 49 with 2:19 left on the clock. On the ensuing Guilford possession, Carleigh Perry corralled an offensive rebound and made the put back to take the lead back, 51-49. With just under two minutes left in the fourth, the Marlins had plenty of opportunities to tie or take the lead. Fortunately, the hosts went 0-5 from the field including a block by Kennedy to secure the one-point win.

Wilkerson paced both offenses with 14 points with four three-point shots and six rebounds. Lindsay Gauldin and Perry each finished with 12 points as Perry also had 12 rebounds on the evening.

The opening period was a slow start for both squads. Virginia Wesleyan scored the first five points before Guilford answered with five of the next seven points to trail by two (7-5). The Marlins scored the final two points to lead 9-5 as the game went to the second.

The Quakers' offense came alive in the second period as they out scored the hosts 13-7 including five points from Gauldin. GC went into the locker room up by two (18-16). The third was another profitable period for Guilford as it won the 10 minutes, 19-13, and led by eight (37-29) going into the final 10 minutes of regulation.

Both teams struggled from the field but the Quakers shot 34-percent compared to 29.5 for Virginia Wesleyan. GC also out rebounded the hosts 49-28.
