The Short Story: The Roanoke College field hockey team continued to extend its win streak with a 6-0 win over the visiting Ferrum Panthers on Wednesday evening at Kerr Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It did not take long for Grace Vernarelli to score the game-winner as she found the back of the box just 1:23 into the contest off a pass from Martha Hurley.
- Less than a minute later, Hope Keller passed the ball to Vernarelli who scored her second goal of the evening at 2:12.
- Vernarelli completed the hat trick at 5:07, once again on a pass from Hurley.
- Hurley then added her third assist of the contest when she passed to Saige Bullock who scored the Maroons' fourth goal of the opening quarter at 10:52.
- Lindsey Keyes was able to score unassisted early in the second quarter to put Roanoke ahead 5-0 at halftime.
- Carsyn Poppa finished the Maroons' scoring on the night with her first career goal at 43:46 off a penalty corner from Keller.
BY THE NUMBERS
- The hat trick by Vernarelli was the first for a Maroon this season.
- It was the first on the evening by a Maroon student-athlete as Cameron Shackford of the women's soccer team scored three goals against Randolph.
- Roanoke led the Panthers in both shots (25-3) and penalty corners (13-1).
- Madison Wingerter improved to 8-2 on the season after playing all 60 minutes in goal.
