Maroons Win Third-Straight With 3-0 Shutout Win Over Hood

The Short Story: In its home-opener, the Roanoke College field hockey team collected its third-straight shutout victory with a 3-0 win over the visiting Blazers of Hood College. With the win, the Maroons improved to 3-2 on the season. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Tess Taloumis got things started for Roanoke just 7:33 into the game with a goal off a pass from Lindsey Keyes. It was Taloumis' first goal of the season. 
  • Both teams played a defensive stalemate for the rest of the first half, with Roanoke leading 1-0 at the intermission.
  • With less than five minutes left in the third period, Saige Bullock took a pass from Clare McCurley and score her first goal of the season at 40:53, giving the Maroons a 2-0 lead.
  • Grace Vernarelli scored her fourth goal of the season with exactly six minutes left in the game while the defense held strong for the rest of the contest, giving Roanoke the 3-0 win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Blazers took their lone shot of the contest at 12:51 of the first quarter. The Maroon defensive did not allow another shot for the rest of the game. Roanoke outshot the Blazers 23-1 overall.
  • For the game, the Maroons took 12 penalty corners while not allowing one for Hood.
  • Madison Wingerter played all 60 minutes in goal collecting one save of the lone Blazer shot.
