Bernard's 2OT Score Lifts UMW Field Hockey Past Randolph-Macon

Junior Emma Bernard scored her second goal of the day with 31 seconds elapsed in the second overtime to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team past Randolph-Macon College on Tuesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles even their season mark at 4-4.

Bernard opened the scoring at 6:51 of the first, caging a pass from sophomore Paige Stewart through traffic to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. After a scoreless second quarter, the same duo would connect again to give UMW a 2-0 edge. This time, Bernard carried the ball to the right corner and crossed to Stewart, who redirected the pass into goal.

Randolph-Macon battled back, scoring at 42:35 to draw within one, and again in the final seconds off a penalty corner to knot the game and send the proceedings to overtime.

After a scoreless first ten minute extra period, Bernard wasted little time in the second OT, taking a pass from Zoe Hammond into the circle and connecting for her eighth goal of the year.

Each team had 12 shots in the contest, with the Eagles holding an 8-4 advantage in penalty corners. UMW goalkeeper Bailey McNabb made seven saves for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday when the Eagles visit Franklin and Marshall College at 12:00 noon.
