The Lead: The Roanoke College women's basketball team hadn't taken the court since an 84-41 win over Hood back on January 2nd when they played host to Guilford College on Wednesday night. The game with the Quakers kicked of a four week stretch that sees 14 Old Dominion Athletic Conference games on the schedule. Guilford enjoyed an early, eight-point, edge before Roanoke rallied to tie the game at 14-14. The Maroons held their guests scoreless for almost seven-minutes and took a 28-23 lead into the break. The game would remain close into the fourth quarter, 43-40, before Roanoke exploded down the stretch to pull away for the 20-point win, 64-44.

How it Happened:

  • JaBryah Haverkamp hit a free throw in the opening seconds to put Roanoke in front. However, Guilford would score nine straight over the next five minutes of play. The Maroons finally hit their first field goal with 4:12 remining in the first as the Quakers closed the first quarter with a 14-10 advantage.
  • Consecutive baskets by Kristina Harrel and Morgan Micallef before a Micallef free throw would once again put Roanoke in front. Another Harrel layup capped a Maroon 14-0 run that allowed RC to push their advantage to seven. The two ODAC foes would play even the rest of the first half with Roanoke in front, 28-23, at the break.
  • Guilford would score five in a row to make it a 30-28 score, early in the third quarter. A Whitney Hopson hoop made it 36-30, but the Maroons couldn't pull away and the game would head into the final frame with RC still enjoying a five-point margin.
  • With less than 8:00 on the clock, Guilford had closed to within 43-40, before an offensive explosion by the Maroons would finally put the game away. As the clock ticked down towards 00:00, Ayanna Scarborough scored on a put-back to see the Maroons post a 20-point win, 64-44.
  • Harrel led all scorers with 20 points while Renee Alquiza posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Hopson scored nine points to go with six rebounds, five assists, and six of RC's 17 steals. Lauren Keel came off the bench to add nine points and six rebounds as the Maroons would force 29 turnovers.

Up next: The Maroons will host Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday as the back end of a double header with the men. The game with the Marlins is slated to start at 4:30 or about a half an hour after the conclusion of the Roanoke vs. Hampden-Sydney game.
