Hornets Fall to TCNJ in Round Three

19-Game Winning Streak Snapped by Lions

EWING, N.J. --- The Hornets national title hopes came to an end Sunday afternoon, as fourth-ranked Lynchburg College was defeated 3-0 by #3 The College of New Jersey in the quarterfinals of the 2011 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament, hosted by TCNJ.

The Hornets out-shot their hosts 16-7, and held a 16-8 edge in penalty corners, but three scores by Kathleen Notos carried the day for the Lions.

After a scoreless first half, Notos, a junior, scored her first goal of the day at 37:34. The play following the goal was dominated by the Hornets, including eight-straight shots and eight-unanswered penalty corners over the next 24 minutes, but LC couldn't break through. Notos countered the Hornet onslaught by posting her second of the day at 61:24, assisted by Caitlyn Jenkins, and followed with a tally with just 26 ticks left on the clock from Erin Walker. Notos now has six goals on the season and scored on her only three shots of the day.

Shannon Syciarz made nine saves for TCNJ (22-2).

Lynchburg ends its season 19-2, the loss snapping a 19-game winning streak. LC's seventh-straight NCAA Tournament appearance resulted in the program's second trip to the NCAA National Quarterfinals.
