Generals Advance to NCAA Field Hockey Regional Final

GLASSBORO, N.J. --- Junior forward Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./Groton School) and junior midfielder Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./Glenelg) each registered one goal, as the ninth-ranked Washington and Lee field hockey team advanced to the NCAA Regional Final for the first time in program history with a 2-0 victory over 18th-ranked Scranton on Saturday on the campus of Rowan University.

With the shutout, senior goalkeeper Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) broke her own school record for single-season shutouts with her eighth this campaign.

Neither team scored in the opening period, but three minutes into the second the Generals (18-0) notched the first tally of the contest. Carrying the ball on the right side near the end line, Tobeason sent the ball into the circle toward Muneses.

Muneses quickly turned and first a shot toward the left post. The ball passed by two defenders and the goalkeeper, hitting the back of the cage, to push W&L in front, 1-0. The one-goal margin held up through the rest of the half.

Just six minutes into the third, the Blue and White doubled its advantage. Senior forward Grace Weise (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin School) controlled the ball on a counterattack just past midfield. After a few touches, she sent a long pass into the circle. A Royals' (18-2) defender attempted to block the ball but it continued on its path.

Tobeason was running on the right side and reached the ball with only the goalkeeper to beat. The keeper came off her line to close off the angle, but Tobeason one-touched it into the left corner to stretch the lead to 2-0 with 8:19 left in the third.

The Blue and White held on for the 2-0 victory, as the Generals' defense decisively closed out the game, not allowing a shot or penalty corner for Scranton over the final 15 minutes of the contest.

W&L led in shots in the game, 14-8, but the Royals edged the Blue and White in penalty corners, 7-4.

With her goal, Tobeason moved to ninth on the program's single-season goals list with 15. She also moved into a tie for 10th on the career list with 23.

Amil played all 60 minutes, stopping four shots to notch her record-breaking shutout. Junior Claire Maguire saw all 60 minutes of action for Scranton, making six saves.

The Generals take on fourth-ranked Rowan in the regional finals on Sunday at 1:00 pm. The winner of that contest will advance to the NCAA National Semifinals next weekend. Rowan defeated Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday, 2-1.
