Generals Fall to Williams in NCAA Second Round

SALISBURY, Md. --- The No. 13 Washington and Lee University field hockey team fell to No. 8 Williams College in the second round of the NCAA DIII Field Hockey Tournament 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. 

In the first-ever meeting between the two teams, the Ephs (14-5) scored twice in the first half of play and again during the final stanza to earn a shutout victory over the Generals (17-3). 

The initial tally came off a corner set-play, the Pilar Torres input found Emily Batchelor at the top of the circle, the NESCAC player of the year one-timed the ball into the back of the goal for her 20th score of the season. 

Shea van den Broek received a feed from Catherine Torres at the 24:36 mark to put the Ephs up with a 2-0 advantage after the first 30 minutes of play. 

The Generals held Williams scoreless during the third quarter but Kelly McCarthy punched in an insurance goal in the final stanza after collecting a loose ball off an Abby Long (Kansas City, Mo. / Pembroke Hill) save.

The Ephs outshot the Generals 14-5 with Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./ Groton) and Peyton Tysinger  (Norfolk, Va./ Norfolk Academy) recorded all five of the attempts for the Blue and White. The two were able to just put one shot on frame each. 

Four of W&L's five shots came in the third stanza. 

Long made six stops in the final contest of the season. 

Post-season awards will continue to be announced throughout the remainder of the year and the 2023 slate will be revealed during the spring.
