ODAC Golfers of the Week

FOREST, Va. --- A little over a week's worth of events are included in the Week 29-capping report for men's and women's golf. Several tournaments of varying field sizes and length of play included ODAC golfers, with most featuring very high finishes by league stars. Those earning ODAC Golfer of the Week recognition for Wednesday, March 22 are Guilford College sophomore Michael Vick and Washington and Lee University sophomore Marcella Mercer.

Below are entries for each of the winners from today's release. The schedule below will be used for reporting ODAC Athletes of the Week:

  • Mondays: baseball, lacrosse, softball, tennis
  • Tuesdays: outdoor track & field
  • Wednesdays: m/w golf

MEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK
Michael Vick | Guilford | So.
Vick, a sophomore from Raleigh, N.C., picks up his second ODAC weekly award of the season following a top-10 finish at the well-attended Jekyll Island Collegiate hosted at the Pine Lakes and Oleander courses at the Jekyll Island Golf Club in Jekyll Island, Ga. He also competed at the Tiger Invitational hosted by Hampden-Sydney College during this reporting period. He finished tied for fifth in that event at 2-over 74 at Forest Creek Golf Club in Pinehurst, N.C. Guilford placed second by a stroke to nationally third-ranked Methodist University in the weather-shortened event at 13-over 300. At the Jekyll Island Collegiate, Vick finished in a tie for seventh place at 4-under par 212, 10 shots back of runaway winner Alex Price from Christopher Newport University. Vick, who posted 11 birdies and a tournament second-best two eagles over his three rounds of action, opened with a 1-over 73 on the par-72 layout set to 6,700 yards on the Pine Lakes Course. He improved by two shots in round two thank to four birdies against three bogeys. His final 18 holes was played at 4-under 68 powered by another four birdies with an eagle on the finishing 18th hole. Vick's efforts helped nationally fifth-ranked Guilford place fifth overall at 1-over 865 (291-283-291). Top-ranked Emory University won the event at 22-under 842. Vick is the owner of the ODAC's best average at 71.6 over 17 rounds of play. He is currently ranked #5 in Division III by Golfstat.com.

WOMEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK
Marcella Mercer | Washington and Lee | So.
Mercer, a sophomore from Bigfork, Montana, picks up her first ODAC weekly award of the season following a strong showing at the well-attended Jekyll Island Collegiate over the weekend. Mercer was the top ODAC finisher at the 54-hole event as she tied for 25th overall at 15-over 231 on the par 72 layout set to 5,600 yards at the Indian Mound Course at Jekyll Island Golf Club. She opened with a 4-over 76 and improved by one stroke in round two, having carded six total birdies over the first 36 holes. She posted an 8-over 80 over the final 18 holes to finish 13 shots back of medalist Sydney Kuo from Washington University in St. Louis. Washington and Lee, ranked eighth in Division III by Golfstat.com, placed ninth on the 24-team leaderboard at 71-over 935 (316-311-308). Nationally second-ranked University of Redlands won the event at 37-over 901. Mercer is third in the ODAC with a 76.8 scoring average over 12 rounds of competition this year. She is currently ranked 40th in country by Golfstat.
