Top-Ranked R-MC Advances to Round of 16 with Win Over Scranton

ASHLAND, Va. --- Senior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) recorded his second straight double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Junior Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) led all scorers with 16 points, as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team defeated Scranton 63-41 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to extend its win streak to 27 games.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Royals hit a pair of three-pointers and jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead before Mallory had four points in an 11-0 run that was capped by a triple from sophomore Vincent Payne (Frederick, Md./St. Maria Goretti) as the Yellow Jackets took a 13-6 advantage with 12:15 left in the first half. Scranton pulled within six at 16-10 before a pair of free throws by freshman Jabril Robinson (Derwood, Md./South Kent Prep) and two layups by Mallory pushed the lead to a dozen at 22-10 with 7:15 remaining. RMC was up 22-14 with 6:20 left before Mbangue made a free throw and a layup, Mallory had a follow and Coble hit a trey as the Yellow Jackets led 30-14 at intermission. Mallory had 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
  • RMC maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half. Mallory converted a three-point play to put the home team up 44-22 midway through the period. A free throw by Mbangue gave the Yellow Jackets their largest lead of 30 points at 61-31 with 3:15 remaining before recording the 63-41 victory.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • R-MC extended its home win streak to 64 games, a program record, the NCAA Division III record and the longest current streak in all NCAA divisions.
  • The RMC defense held Scranton to its lowest point total of the season. Its previous low was 59 points.
  • The Royals hit their first two three-pointers, then missed 10 straight. Scranton entered the game as one of the top three-point shooting teams in the nation, but hit just 3 of 17 from behind the arc (17.6%).
  • Mallory recorded four blocked shots. He has 271 for his career, a program and ODAC record.
  • RMC had three players score in double figures with 16 by Mbangue, 15 by Mallory and 10 by Robinson. junior Will Coble (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day) made three triples for nine points.
  • Mbangue was 7 for 8 on field goal attempts and Mallory was 6 for 9 from the floor for the second straight contest.
  • Mallory has 1,459 career points to sit in 15th place on RMC's career scoring list.
  • Senior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) has 1,255 career points to hold 28th place on RMC's career scoring list.
  • Robinson had five assists and Talbert had two.
  • Talbert has 367 career assists, good for eighth on the program's career assists list.
  • RMC outrebounded Scranton 39-24. Mallory had 10, while Coble tied his career best with six.
  • Mallory has 841 career rebounds, good for fourth place on RMC's career rebounding list.
  • Talbert had one steal.
  • Talbert has 195 career steals, the second-highest total in program history.

  • RMC allowed a total of 22 points in the first half in its first two NCAA Tournament games.
